The town's rich history began with its founding in 1836 when surveyors discovered an area that would become known as Canton Township because of its natural resources: coal seams near Greenfield Lake and sandbars along Lake Erie's southern shoreline. The town was named after George Washington Carver who donated land for development within its boundaries; Carver had come from rural Georgia where he had owned farmland but died without children so his land could be developed into what is now North Canton Township (the only place in Ohio where this happens). In 1870, when North Canton celebrated its centennial anniversary, officials estimated that it had over 6500 residents; today estimate that number at around 9000 people due to migration from elsewhere in Northeast Ohio during recent decades.[2][3][4] As early as 1868 there were plans for a electric streetcar line between Cleveland and Akron which would have connected both cities via new streets built through out each community[5] but these never came about due to financial reasons; however streetcar service did eventually reach North Canton thanks to local entrepreneur Augustus Brougham who purchased rights from then-Cleveland Electric Railway Company president John Pinchot[6] On October 15th 1907,[7] Brougham opened his first store - called The Gilded Cage - on Park Avenue which still stands today serving as a commercial center for much of East Aurora/North Olmsted Township while most residential areas were demolished during suburban growth throughout Northeast Ohio following World War II until they re-emerged only slightly modified form their former homes[8]. However even prior to this date there existed some type of commercial activity taking place within what are now pedestrian-accessible neighborhoods including stores on Euclid Avenue between Canal Street and Market Square before receiving their own street grids like those existing on Park AvenueToday although most storefronts remain unoccupied various restaurants occupy formerindustrial buildings once used for storage or processing materials used industrially
