Niles is a city in Niles Township, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,435 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Niles Township. The first known resident of what is now Niles was David Casson in 1795. In 1801, John Morton purchased land from David Casson and set about building a house on it. By 1830, the town had grown so large that it split off from Niles Township and incorporated as its own municipality. In 1836, when Union General Ulysses S. Grant visited Niles for dinner during his army campaigns in Ohio, he recommended that the people of the township give him a home near where he was staying at Harper's Ferry in Virginia. When Grant returned to America two years later and discovered that his army had been disbanded after the Battle of Gettysburg (1863), he ordered all military officers must leave North Carolina if they were still living there—a policy which soon caused many soldiers to return to their homes in Ohio instead of continuing down south with their units. When Cleveland became an American city in 1847, it decided to make Niles its municipal center since Carthage Heights west of downtown was too far away for most people to walk or take public transportation into town on weekdays without going outriver or across country; furthermore Carthage Heights lay just outside of the city limits and could only be accessed by boat from what is today Quicken Loans Arena on Lake Erie (the only way into/out). The growth of Cleveland led to development around both edges of town: northward along once-rural streets such as Elmira Road until you hit Quesenberry Road then east along Quicken Loans Arena until you reach Academy Road; while southward along University Circle until you reach Superior Avenue which leads back into downtown Cleveland proper (and eventually out onto Euclid Avenue). Niles, OH is a town in Niles County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Niles Township was David Fenton in 1810. He and his family built a cabin on the West Branch of the Wabash River. In 1814, Fenton married Anna Lapp and they began to farm land around their cabin. In 1827, they bought of land from John Cordon for $4 per acre. They started to build a log cabin known as "Fenton's Cabin". The first school in Niles Township was taught by Mrs. Ann Morrow in 1830. A store opened up in 1834 and named it "Aitcheson's Store". A post office called Niles was established in 1835; it changed its name to Nilesville three times before being renamed finally to Nilesville in 1840. By 1840, there were nine families living inside the log cabin: Fenton, Lapp/Laughlin/Howse/Petersen (the first white settler), Goodyear (a slave), Gossett (a free black man), Bates (an Indian], Butterfield (a white man who worked for Gossett) and Webber (a white boy). In 1840 also came George Mifflin with his printing press from Cincinnati as part of an importation that included more than 2 million pounds of paper products from England that year alone. Mifflin became one of the leading printers in America and founded The Ohio Press Company with partner John Dolan which published newspapers throughout most of Ohio until 1870 when it merged with another papers company to become The Cleveland Press Company Limited which published papers through 1975 Mifflin also built what would be known as “The White House” near where he lived on Prospect Street now known as Independence Hall Museum across from Statehouse Annexe
Niles Township was organized in 1836, and named for Niles, a town in Upper Michigan. The first courthouse in the township was built in 1840. In 1853, Niles became the capital of Ohio.
