Niles is a city in Niles Township, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Niles County. The name of the town may come from a surveyor named John Niles who traveled through the area in 1811 and found that there were no villages or settlements named Niles. Instead he discovered an extensive salt mine on his trip and called the settlement "Nile's Mines", after one of his men who worked there. A post office was established in 1813 under this name, and it is still operational today. The first settler to arrive in what is now Niles Township was David Hackett, arriving in 1797. He founded what became known as Hackettstown on land he had purchased from the Shawnee Indians. In 1812, Nicholas Girard built a gristmill here which became Girard's Mills (now part of downtown). By 1830, there were over 30 mills operating in the township. In 1840, Daniel Worthington erected a large brick courthouse which served as the center of government for much of central Ohio until it was destroyed by fire in 1849. The building still stands today as part of nearby Mentor's University campus; it has been variously used for offices, classrooms, and housing since then. In 1871-72 when local farmer George Biddle donated 800 acres (30 km2) to be developed into what is now downtown Niles, townspeople voted to rename their section "Biddletown". This designation lasted until 1959 when demolition began on what had been Biddletown and replaced it with new development including the current business district around Mentor University Park. According to The National Geographic Atlas OF American Towns & Cities: 1850-2010 (2011), "the growth rate for all types of businesses slowed between 1940 and 1970 but then resumed somewhat more rapidly between 1980 and 2000." According to this report: "Some researchers attribute these changes not just to economic conditions but alsoto increasesin racial diversity within cities."

In 1836, the town was incorporated as part of Trumbull Township but remained unincorporated until its incorporation into Lucas County by an act of Congress in 1907 as part of a statewide reformation effort following territorial acquisitions by other states during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The Cass Building, built in 1898 as one of only two buildings designated for use exclusively by women within township limits, remains significant both historically and architecturally because it served as both headquarters for township government and local courtrooms from 1908 until 1978 when those services were transferred to downtown Cleveland. In 1916, Trumbull Township annexed Wauseon Township to form Trumbull County; however, only Wauseon residents voted to annex themselves back intoLucas County effective November 3rd 1917 due largely to concerns about water quality within their own township despite assurances from county officials that all necessary measures had been taken for subsurface drainage should such a request be made again in the future After annexation into Lucas County occurred there were persistent efforts by some individuals or groups seeking annexation back intoTrumbull Township without success through various means uterine petitions letters protestations zoning changes even going so far as threats legal action agitating against what they saw as unconstitutional actions taken by county authorities while at least some developers began construction on properties insideTrumbull Township boundaries without permits or compensation prompting then-County Treasurer William Ahern to condemn much or all of those projects resulting in an estimated $5 million worth total loss for Trumbull Township
On November 10, 1804, Niles was founded by Nathan Eaton in the town of Niles. The first post office was established at Niles on May 30, 1805. On January 1, 1861, Niles became a city.
