Niles, Ohio is a town in the eastern part of the United States. The population was 21,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Niles were French colonists who founded a small village on the north side of the Cuyahoga River in 1795. The area became known as Village du Pont (Village of Rocks) because of its numerous rocks that could be used for building purposes or dumped into rivers to make dams. In 1803, General George Washington visited Niles and recommended that it be named for Major-General Nathaniel Niles, one of his subordinates in the American Revolutionary War. Congress agreed and granted Niles land on which he built a small tavern and storehouse called "Nile's Landing". The name 'Niles' continued to be used until 1813 when it was changed to 'Cleveland'. In 1830, while still under British rule, Cleveland Purchased 1/4 section from Nathaniel Niles for $2 dollars per acre. This purchase created Cleveland Heights, one of Greater Cleveland's most important neighborhoods today. In 1837, during Andrew Jackson's presidency, Cleveland annexed much of Holmes County including parts of Maple Shade Township (now unincorporated). After annexation many residents left Holmes County for new homes in western and southern Ohio counties such as Uniontown (now Kenton), Delaware Twp., Steubenville (now West Virginia), Canfield (now Aurora), Arlington Heights (now Lakewood), etc.. During World War II there were many factories located around Niles including Ford Motor Company’s Willow Run Arsenal; GM’s Warren Truck Plant; Chrysler’s Ferris Wheel Factory; JBL Radio Park; Northrop Aircraft Company’s Grumman plant housing four airplane types: P-39E Airacobra reconnaissance fighter planes; B-24 Liberator bomber planes carrying incendiary materials over Japan during World War II; P-47 Thunderbolt fighters engaged with Japanese aircraft over Burma during World War II; F-86 Sabre jet fighters flown by United States Air Force pilots against Nazi Germany during World War II

Niles, Ohio is a small town in central Ohio that has been around for over 100 years. The town was founded in 1821 by John Niles and his brother-in-law, James Caldwell. The original village of Niles was located on the banks of the Maumee River and consisted of just a few homes. In 1825, John Niles sold the village to Nicholas Noe. Nicholas Noe built a log cabin near the present day intersection of Route 7 and State Route 6. The Village continued to grow until it had a population of 350 people in 1850. In 1872, after many petitions were submitted by citizens, the state legislature passed an act Sponsorizing Township Formation in Area now comprising part of Niles Township. On April 8th, 1872, township formation took place with 5 residents voting in favor and John Niles being elected as first township president. Nile’s growth eventually led to its annexation by other townships within central Ohio beginning in 1907. After annexation, many businesses moved into what is now known as downtown Nile while additional development occurred on both sides of the river – creating what is today known as “The Loop” which includes much older historic buildings along State Route 6 between downtown and the riverbank area north ofowntown. Today, there are over 1,500 residents living within boundaries defined by Niles Township limits while another thousand or so residents are scattered throughout adjacent townships within central Ohio including Defiance Junction (to the east), Lucasville (to the southeast), Westlake (to the south) and Northfield (to the west). Despite these fluctuations in population size due to various factors such as births/deaths/ moves/forces within local communities or neighbouring counties; each year since 1976 has seen about 2% growth for township totals vs statewide averages of 1%. This success rate speaks toerveshipped natureof thisuniaxed community which boasts cultural treasures dating back more than 100 years from when it officially became part of central Ohio!
