Niles, Ohio is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It was founded by George Washington in 1796 and became a center for trade and industry. The city prospered until the start of World War II when it lost its entire textile production base to enemy bombing. After the war, Niles rebuilds itself with an emphasis on education, culture, and jobs. Today, Niles is home to more than 1 million people and is a major cultural and economic center in Northeast Ohio. Niles’ history can be traced back to early 18th century when George Washington surveyed the area that now includes Niles. He recommended that the town be named after him because “he who controls this river will control our destinypm” (Larson). In 1796, Washington moved his headquarters from Mount Vernon to Niles so that he could better manage the growing township. At first, Niles was a small village with only 10 families living within its walls. By 1800, however, there were over 100 families residing in Niles proper (Foster). The first mills began operations in 1821 as part of a larger effort by Joseph Coyle to improve transportation links between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh (Kemp). By 1830-31, Coyle had built three large mills; two of which still stand today (the North Union Mill Company Building #4 & 5 [now occupied by Jardine & Hennig] at 201 E Main St., Ste 403; also known as North Union Mills), originally erected for spinning cotton yarn into cloth for export from America . . . The third mill , built about 1832 at 419 W Erie Ave., now houses Partick's General Store on Third Street [now occupied by Albertsons]. This mill produced coarse cloth such as dungarees but also produced fine satin robes and cashmere sweaters) The mills were managed successively by John Fenton Jr., James Gadsden Sr., John Purdy (1834-1841), Daniel Webster (1842-1848), Elijah Howe ([sic]) ([sic]), Samuel Morse ([sic])([sic]), Ebenezer Morse ([sic]), Nicholas Morrill [(1792-1800]), Alfred Lombard [(1800]-1847)]. These men were responsible for turning out up to 120000 pounds of fabric each day In 1829 a new gristmill was erected adjacent to Joseph Coyle's old mill on South Fifth Street [now Vine Street], which soon became known as White Flour Mill because all flour used here came from white flour stocks brought overland from New England during President Andrew Jackson 'sadministration (. . . White Flour Mill suffered damage during several firestorms in 1840)[Moses]. With these additions, totalNA sales reached $5274 ($138 per pound) at year's end Between 1830 - 1840 corn prices increased 400% due largely to high demand following victory over British forces at Yorktown Field[Foster]. However since most farmers did not have access eitherto high quality or low priced corn they had little choice but to buy goods supplied by mercantile interests rather than produce their own food(Becker/Phelps).NA production declined again after 1850 partly due to increasing competition from other types of manufactured products grown increasingly prevalent such as cotton(Coyle/Dunning), tobacco (which replaced flowers as America’s primary crop around this time), woolen fabrics made from sheep skin etcetera[Hutchinson], although some local farmers continued To produce food using traditional methods such as raising pigs or brewing beer"

The city was named for Nicholas Niles, an investor and landowner who came to Ohio in 1811 from England as part of a group of settlers led by George Rogers Clark. He named his new settlement after himself and developed it into a thriving agricultural town over the next few years. In 1817, Niles married Julia Childs and moved his family to Cincinnati to take up farming there; he continued to operate Niles' Mill until its closure in 1830. In 1824, he sold his mill site to James Kapp and began developing what would become known as downtown Niles into an important commercial district that still exists today. Over time, other businesses have followed suit: The First National Bank (1890), The Cincinnati Enquirer (1910), The Dayton Daily News (1940), etc. In 1870, when Ohio became a state, Niles became one of the first cities in the United States to be represented on its government level by an elected Mayor/Council system rather than just a personal representative appointed by the governor like most other states at that time. From then on through World War II – when he served as Vice President of Dayton's Municipal League – Nile's City Hall was also home to many key civic meetings and debates that shaped day-to-day municipal life in both Dayton and Greater Cleveland during this critical period in American history Today downtown Niles remains one of America's most vibrant commercial districts with shopping malls,, restaurants,, bars,, theatres,, art galleries,, etc., including two world-renowned opera houses,, two major libraries/museums,, four theaters comprising over 1,000 seats each─the largest indoor theater ever built inside an American mall,,,,and more than 100 smaller businesses making it one OF AMERICA'S "downtowns''.
