On July 6, 1800, the village had a total population of 103 and was incorporated as a town on December 1, 1800. In 1827, the Town of Niles merged with the Village of Athens to form Athens-Niles Township. The township was disbanded on March 15, 1907 when it merged with Lucas County as part of an annexation plan conceived by George Kessler that would have added more than 12 municipalities to Columbus metropolitan area. In 1854–1855, $2 million were spent on building railroads through central Ohio by Jeptha Washburn who hoped to create a transportation link between Cincinnati and Detroit; this investment failed because there was no demand for goods transported northward beyond Toledo and Akron which were already connected by railroad to Chicago and other cities west of the river. However, Niles became one of the first villages in Ohio to lay down its own streetlights when two large gas lamps were installed in 1857 just south of First Streets Market Place along Third Avenue It wasn't until after World War II that television commercials began appearing throughout America calling Niles "The City That Built You". When there was an electrical outage during halftime of Super Bowl XVIII at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara County (in Silicon Valley), Vince McMahon decided that he wanted his logo shown above Phil Donahue's head instead which led to all TVs being turned off in downtown Niles during pre-game show preparations due to low voltage levels across Silicon Valley caused byismanagementism within Silicon Valley companies who didn't want their brands associated with McMahon's product
