Niles, Ohio is a town in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 20,837 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest community in Niles Township and one of two communities in Lucas County. It is located on the northern edge of Mentor Township and is bordered by Mentor on the east, North Olmsted on the west, and Medina to the north. The first European settlers in what is now Niles were Quakers who established a small settlement near present-day Wintersville in 1795. They named their new town after John Niles (1726-1812), an American politician from New York who served as Secretary of State under George Washington during the War for Independence. The town gained its current name when it became part of Lucas County in 1821 following approval by General David Dixon with land grants from Hamilton Wright. In 1827, Niles developer Nicholas Janklow built one of his largest homes there, which remains standing today and has been used as a museum since 1978.
