In 1865, Niles had a population of 1,000 people and two stores before it lost its status as an incorporated village when it merged into larger Township of Muskegon Heights
Niles is an unincorporated community in Stark County, Ohio, United States. It lies east of the city of Cleveland on the north side of the Cuyahoga River. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Niles was established in 1813, and remained in operation until it closed in 1906. The name "Niles" derives from a word meaning "a place where beans are bound." In 1837, a store and blacksmith shop were built by John Niles at what is now North Main Street and Prospect Avenue. In 1868, the town became part of Cleveland and its post office changed to Cleveland East. A new meetinghouse was built in 1870 and dedicated by Bishop James Gorman. It served as the community's church for many years until it burned down in 1922. A smallpox clinic opened its doors here in 1916 and continued operations until 1952 when it moved to University Hospital near downtown Cleveland. The William McKinley Rural Electrification Administration Power House is located on Saginaw Road south of town northeast ofCLEVELAND OH 44115 inside points I-71 & I-675 exit 33 (Municipal Rd).
