Niles, Ohio is a town in the American state of Ohio. The population was 9,182 at the 2010 census. It is located in Niles Township. The name "Niles" comes from the Potawatomi word "nigikal," meaning "to cross over." The first settler in what is now Niles Township was John Niles, who arrived in 1793. He named his township after him and built a house there on the banks of the Muskingum River. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down John Niles' house, but they spared his wife and children. His other three children - Johnathan (1796-1868), Rachel (1800-1878), and Lucy (1802-1881) - eventually moved to Canada with their father and began farming there. In 1825, they established a permanent farm at Castle Moynihan near present day Portsmouth while their father stayed behind to manage the main home place; it became known as Moynihan House National Historic Site in 1932. In 1850, when Ohio become an independent country under US federal rule following the American Revolution, Niles voters approved a referendum for incorporation into Cleveland County – one of only two townships not to be included within that county's boundaries until 1959. On July 16, 1871, during the height of rapid growth around Cleveland due to railroad construction across central Ohio – including piles of sawdust left by builders at Main Street and Cedar Avenue – about 100 people gathered for an open meeting called by local farmer George Stephenson to consider incorporation into Cincinnati as well; however no action was taken because no vote could be taken without signatures from all residents living in incorporations proposed within each township boundary! On November 5th of that year following heavy rains which caused flooding throughout much of central Ohio – particularly along Cedar Avenue where sawdust had been piled high amongst standing water resulting from heavy rains prior week – another meeting was held at which time trustees Daniel Laughlin and James Haggerty recommended constituting their respective townships within newly formed Clinton County instead! They were successful this time despite some opposition from residents living near Carterville who argued that they should remain part of Lucas County! From then on every new township formation through 1889 proceeded automatically via annexation by adjacent counties! AsClintonCounty grew rapidly with few major changes outside annexation proceedings it quickly outgrew its original borders creating what we now know aswithin our town limits: hugs both sides of Cedar Avenue bordering ClintonCounty yet remaining largely unincorporated!
