Niles is a city in Niles County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,746 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Niles County. The first European to enter what is now Ohio was French Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named the area "New France." A national park and Preserve were established in 1837 by President James K. Polk as part of his Indian Removal Act. In 1860, Niles became part of the new state of Ohio when it was organized from parts of Indiana and Michigan Territory. The town site at present-day Niles had been surveyed in 1826 by John Greenleaf Whipple with land east of the Scioto River donated by General Anthony Wayne. The village began construction on a courthouse and jail in 1830 and initial shopping and services were provided by local farmers until a schoolhouse and post office were built in 1832. In 1836, George Washingtons father-in-law, Colonel Moses Blanchard bought 5 acres (20,000 m2) within the limits of modern day Niles for $1 an acre (4 ha). This property became known as "Blanchardsburg" because it lay north of downtown on State Route 12A before becoming Northwest Side Parkland which later included much undeveloped land around today's Civic Center area including North Campus Drive near where I-75 exits off Interstate 66/I-71 south to Cleveland Avenue; East Campus Drive between Ridge Road NW and Euclid Avenue NE - this area would become Apple Hill Park; West Campus Drive between Ridge Road NE and Euclid Avenue NE also becoming Apple Hill Park; Rolling Meadows Cemetery located east along Ridge Road NW from today's civic center siting just west of today's township line then rolling to its current location east along that same road north to its current eastern terminus after intersecting I-77 southbound just prior to joining I'd like to thank my research assistant Timo Lippoldt for helping me assemble this information
