The stone mill closed in the 1940s but its remains can still be seen today as part of the village's historical district. A post Office called Niles was established at this location on March 1, 1837, under territorial mail routes controlled by Ohio University; it discontinued operations July 25, 1865 (amalgamation with Wickliffe). In 1871, when Ohio became a state, Niles became part of Stark County; it remained an unincorporated community until 1920 when it was made a town under section 8 of the new state constitution (). The population peaked at 1,083 during World War II before declining gradually over the next few decades; by 1992 it had shrunk to 556 people.
