The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1692 when John Butler founded a trading post on what are now called Water Street and First Avenue South near where he built his house today (now home to State University). trader Isaac Norris established another post farther upriver on what are now Canal Street and Market Square about two miles downstream from Fort George Wright near present day North Canton Township (now Delaware County). In 1795, following Britain's victory over France at Yorktown, Pennsylvania became a United States territory including all northern Ohio except for three small settlements – Westfield (now Portsmouth), East Windsor/West Milford (now Fairfield), and Newark – which remained under British rule until 1800 when Congress passed An Act for revoking Royal Proclamation No 2 dated 10 October 1800 which granted independence to the United States from Great Britain[1]. On 12 November 1800, John Dickinson presented to Congress a petition signed by 129 residents of Philadelphia recommending that New Jersey be added to the Union as soon as possible due to its strategic location between Canada and Virginia[2][3]. In 1837, Newark incorporated as a city and experienced rapid growth until its incorporation into the United States as a municipality in 1903. Newark’s history begins with its founding by French colonists in 1795. The town was named for Admiral John Forbes who led British forces against American Revolutionary forces at Battle of Fort Stanwix on December 8th, 1794. The Dutch also founded some settlements around what is now Newark but these were smaller and do not share any common history with later arrivals from France or England. The first permanent settler in what is now Newark was Pierre-Joseph De La Salle who arrived in1797 and built his house on the site that would become today’s downtown core. By 1800, there were over 20 families living here and some began to make their own tools and trade goods from local materials such as oakum (a type of gum) to sell throughout the area. The early days of Newark were difficult; many settlers had to fight for survival against harsh weather conditions and hostile Native Americans who often attacked them while they were trying to establish themselves anew among their compatriots near Boston Common/Walking Street bridge across Lower Thames River which would later be renamed Broadwalk after Mayor George Brown). However, through hard work and determination many pioneers managed to create one of America’s most successful colonies – something that would be repeated throughout much of North America during this period when land ownership remained tightly controlled by menials such as wealthy Englishmen (see “The Landlord Class: A History Of American Rentarcity" for more detailed information about this period)). During this time period there were also several other significant events taking place within Newark including: On October 16th 1803 Samuel Morse demonstrated his invention known as “the Telegraph” which allowed instant communication between different parts of America via telegraph lines across Pennsylvania; 3 Daniel Burnham became City Engineer for Cleveland under President James K Polk; he designed public works projects such as Tremont Street Subway (later completed), First National Bank Building (built), Euclid Avenue Bridge (opened), Second Ward Schoolhouse (dedicated) – all while working towards creating what is now considered Cleveland’s Commercial District; 3 Augustus Saint-Gaudens erected his famous statue depicting Liberty Enlightening THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA outside Municipal Hall - becoming one of Americas most iconic landmarks;
