In 1929, General Motors opened its largest plant outside Detroit –GM’s Technical Center –in what would become known as “the heart of America” thanks to research being conducted there into new ways to mass produce cars such as GM’s Opel Kadett models and Chevrolet Celta models that were then entering into their fifth decade of production…. Over time other large plants followed including Chrysler Corporation’s Willowbrook factory which produced Buick Corvettes starting in 1951; Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn Assembly Plant producing Lincoln Continentals beginning in 1957; Chrysler Corp.'s White Sands Factory manufacturing Plymouth Prowlers beginning in 1962….By 2000 all these Plants had closed leaving only small numbers still working although Chevrolet has since discontinued production there citing environmental concerns…..Today few if any plants remain active with most workers concentrated around Bloomfield Township where GM once operated major parts fabrication facilities before moving them offshore……… Today young professionals are increasingly choosing not to work full time jobs but instead live close by or commute into larger metropolitan areas for work….
