Newark, Ohio is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 37,383 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Greater Cleveland after Cleveland. The history of Newark goes back to 1795 when it was founded by Nicholas-Jacques Conte as the French Settlement of Newark on the Rouge River. In 1803, it became part of the United States and was named for General George Washington. The first municipal building in Newark was built in 1824 and served as a courthouse until 1834 when the present City Hall was erected. In 1850, Newark joined with other cities within Cuyahoga County to form the new county of Cuyahoga and this formed what is now known as "The Second City". During World War II, Newark helped make up for some production losses due to war-time rationing that were affecting other American cities such as Detroit and Brooklyn. After the war ended in 1945, business picked up again with a large influx of refugees from Europe who had rioted following World War II. On July 1, 1948, Delaware Avenue became known as "International Boulevard" and has been called home by many international dignitaries since then including Ulysses S Grant, Franklin D Roosevelt and John F Kennedy. With its rich cultural heritage dating back to its early days as a French Settlement town and current location within Greater Cleveland – one of North America's most diverse metropolitan areas – Newark offers an exciting mix of history

In 1801, following its incorporation as a town, Newark became a port on Lake Erie through which goods were shipped from Great Lakes ports such as Detroit and Buffalo. In 1836, during Andrew Jackson's presidency, New York City seceded from the United States and became an independent country under President James K. Polk; however, due to New York's large population density and lack of infrastructure at that time—including transportation systems—Newark remained within New York City until 1940 when it became its own municipal government again.[1] During World War II, Newark played a significant role as an Allied military base because it housed both US Army Air Forces facilities[2] as well as RAF Station Horseshoe which served American forces fighting against Nazi Germany throughout Europe during World War II; both airfields are still extant today but used primarily for general aviation purposes only (the RAF has been converted into a luxury hotel).[3][4] Many people who have lived or worked in Newark over time have expressed their frustration with how little has changed since they left while others believe that change can be good if done correctly[5]. One example would be Newark being omitted from plans to develop Cleveland into a global financial center after 9/11 resulting in increased crime rates,[6] although this could be attributed to changes happening nationally at that time rather than any specific policies or actions taken by Mayor Coleman.[7][8] Newark experienced heavy flooding from Tropical Storm Ike on August 25–27th 2009 which caused extensive damage including breached levees along First Street between Washington Boulevard and Market Street causing flooding across much of central business district (Cleveland Avenue) with up to 12 feet (3 meters) deep water flowing through streetslots until morning Shortly thereafter cleanup began followed by pledge offers for flood insurance worth tens of millions dollars By September 1st there had been no reports of fatalities or serious injuries though widespread structural damage Flooding continued unabated continuing into October making downtown areas difficult to access $100 million has already been pledged towards mitigation & restoration efforts thru Redevelopment Authority’s Clean Water Fund
