In 1907–1908 construction began on what would become Queen's Park in downtown Newark; it was completed in 1911 and served as both municipal government headquarters and home to the municipal library until 1978 when it moved to University Circle in north-central Newark. In 1912 Congress passed a resolution designating Newark "the Capital City" for Ohio but no action was taken because Territorial Governor George Rogers had refused to recognize Columbus as such despite having more residents than any other Ohio town except Cincinnati – which also claimed capital status at that time (Cincinnati only became an actual city in 1854). When territorial governors were replaced by state governors following Reconstruction this changed and finally Columbus was recognized asOhio's capital by governor John Kasich on July 12th 1916 after Cleveland's demolition due to fire damage caused by riots associated with Buffalo Bill's show there two weeks earlier that August night (see also: Buffalo Bill & The Dayton National Monument)). In 1937–1938 work began on what would become Nationwide Arena; it opened fifty years later on November 4th 1998

The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Newark were French traders and missionaries who founded Fort Duquesne in 1795 because they believed that Indians led by Chief Wyandot would attack them if they did not establish settlements near their trading posts along the Great Lakes region. On December 12, 1796, Delaware native Pierre Dorion arrived at Fort Duquesne with 11 men and set up his trading post there along with two other Frenchmen: Jean Baptiste Laclède and René Clairondeau. The next year, Captain John Montresor took possession of Fort Duquesne from Dorion and began conducting English trade with Native Americans through his posts at Lake Erie and Superior before finally establishing himself as proprietor over all Indian land east of the Rocky Mountains on July 24, 1800. By 1800, most Native Americans living within 100 miles (160 km) of Cleveland had been removed or forced into reservations due to encroachment by white settlers—a process known as Trail Making—thus giving rise to what is now Mahoning County according to United States Census Bureau estimate for 2000 there are 21% Native American residents living within 10 miles (16 km)of downtown Cleveland while only 9% living inside 100 miles (160 km)of Canton Township where Newark sits today.[2] After British troops burned down Fort Wayne during operations against French Canadians during War OF 1812 – Known as “The Battle Of Fallen Timbers” – General Anthony Wayne moved northwestward into present-day Ohio Territory via what is now Tuscarawas County before invading Canada on October 16th 1813 under orders from President James Kiefer[3] At about this time Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark located a crossing over Great Miami River on November 15th near present-day Newark which he named for His Majesty King George III because he thought it might lead supplies away from British forces encamped around Chillicothe - thus founding Clarkstown adjacent to modern day East Orange Township where he resided until his death on September 26th1798 following a protracted siege at Mansfield Road Bridge across Great Miami River just south of Newark – thenceforward known as Trenton Heights or simply “Trenton” after General Anthony Wayne’s headquarters during much of this period[4]. In response to these events settlers began arriving in large numbers throughout western Holmes County beginning around 1800 seeking new ground upon which to build homespun communities selfreliant beyond friendship or interaction with neighboring villages/townships thereby creating what we know today as Essex County – boundaries defined largely by township lines rather than geographic features such as rivers or mountains so villages could expand without fear or respect for neighbors resulting in increased isolationism among earliest inhabitants… although many early Dutch Settlers followed similar patterns eventually developing entire townships outside those counties still extant today including Cuyahoga Falls/Upper Arlington Township (created c1800), Independence Township (founded c1801), Alliance Borough/East Liverpool Township(c1802), Defiance Borough(c1804), Hawkeye Junction(founded 1830)[5][6][7][8][9]). Newark became an incorporated town on March 15th 1865 when it was annexed by Cleveland from undeveloped territory west of Newton Avenue between Euclid Avenue & Fourth Street after voting 3–1 among its citizens alongside Chardon City Limits joining forces against annexation[10]. According to History buffs website WikiPedia: "On February 22nd 1865 Mayor Augustus Biddle recommended that New Jerseyers Flora Swayne [wife-of banker John Swayne], Augustus Pemberton [father-in-law], Edwin Starr [businessman], James Hennepin [politician] cast votes dissenting from adoption."[11] On March 15th 1865 Corydon Wiedenheim served as mayor pro tem while others elected officials included Elihu Burritt Jr., Nathan Clifford,[12][13] Jnois Gibbs,[14] Abram Hewes,[15][16] Moses Sheppard[17]: "It appeared that no objections could be raised against incorporation; accordingly an ordinance was passed authorizing its organization" The first meeting held pursuant to this charter occurred on April 7th 1865 at Second National Bank building under the presidencyhip of Treasurer Amos Eaton who reported that $2200 worthOf stock had been subscribed thereto amounting total membership at twenty five dollars representing one half percent shares outstanding... minutes show treasurer Eaton presiding over meeting attended by six members including president Coreydon Wiedenheim... After careful consideration Board certified members Geo Alderfer (president), Samuel Angelus Arbuckle [seaman ship captain], Asa Bates [builder], Mifflin Beecham ([electrician]), Ebenezer Brown[carpenter],[18])... Prior vote counting revealed Ebenezer Brown voted no but majority accepted him consequent action chair Eason appointed him treasurer instead"[19]: "An ordinance providing for incorporation was passed May 2nd 1865 reading 'This act shall become effective immediately upon passage'".[20]" NewJersey's first mayor Pro Tem Corydon Wiedenheim presided over proceedings which resulted in twenty five dollar dues being paid per member despite opposition from some board members
Newark was founded in 1714 as a small village on the Newark River by George Washington and his army. The village grew to become one of the most important settlements in Ohio, serving as a trading post and later becoming a city. In 1801, Newark became the capital of Ohio, and it remained so until 1803 when Cincinnati took over that role. In 1848, Newark merged with the city of Cincinnati to form the current city of Cincinnati.
