Newark is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat ofWarren County. The population was 96,521 at the 2010 census. Newark is located on the Delaware River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Cleveland and 50 miles (80 km) east of Columbus. It is part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Newark were French traders and missionaries, who founded a mission in 1701. In 1795, John Fenton moved his family from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Newark after securing a land grant from then-President George Washington for their settlement near the confluence of the Monongahela and Cuyahoga Rivers. The town was named for Nicholas de Jersey, 4th Baron Jersey who had settled in present-day Philadelphia in 1664 as one of English colonists under James II's rule following his victory over King Charles I at Whitehall on July 12 that year. By 1811 Newark had a population of 1,500 people; by 1815 it had grown to 5,000 people when it became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Cleveland and points southward such as Cincinnati and Louisville.[1] In 1827 Orange Township was organized within Warren County; Newark followed suit two years later. The township lost its town status in 1932 but regained it three years later when Warren County merged with Lake Erie County to form Butler County.[2] The first white settler arrived in what is now Newark in 1701: French traders and missionaries François Xavier Lefebvre and Jean Baptiste Point du Sable[3]. On October 11, 1795 John Fenton purchased 640 acres (258 ha) along the Delaware River from Nicholas de Jersey for £50 sterling[4]. According to early records, Fenton built himself a log cabin on this property which he called "Fentonstown".[5][6] He served as justice of peace for Warren County from 1800 until his death in 1807[7]. His heirs sold their interest in Fentonstown to Henry Dearborn alias Dearborn on February 3rd,[8] who laid out a town site south of where he lived on June 24th,[9][10][11] while also constructing Fort Dearborn – which still stands today – across river from present day First Methodist Church.[12][13] In 1827 Orange Township was organized within Warren County; Newark followed suit two years later[14], becoming an important stop on stagecoach routes between Cleveland and points southward such as Cincinnati and Louisville[15]. On December 2nd 1830 Jacob Wecker filed an application with Clark & Hardesty For Sale Lots comprising: “X’ Block Of Land On Scioto Creek Which Is Now Known As State Route 6 And Alsoettlement Named Park Ridge Which Is Located Just AboveState Route 6 Near By The Current Site Of First United Methodist Church… X’ More Than One Hundred Acres Allowed For A Townsite Maintained By Clark And Hardesty… This Application Was Rejected Because There Was AlreadyA Town Ordered To Be Built At That Location By Isaac Niles” [16]: In response to this application Wecker offered 10 dollars (£10) per acre for incorporation into any future town desired by Clark & Hardesty occupants.–It should be noted that although some early plans show Newark occupying more than one square mile (.98 km²), no actual townsite material exists aside from that mentioned above
In 1814, Newark was chartered as a town in Athens County, Ohio. In 1825, it became the county seat of Athens County. The city of Newark was founded in 1853 by immigrants from Germany and Poland who arrived on the ships "Eagle" and "Dolphin". The first post office opened in Newark on July 4, 1853. In 1870, the city annexed the village of North Brunswick to its boundaries. On November 10, 1907, the City Council voted to merge with neighboring University Heights to form one large municipality known as Newark-University Heights. On October 1st of that year, Mayor John A. Mackey pronounced the merger official and announced that new streets would be renamed after prominent citizens from each community who had supported the merger campaign - Dr. George Washington Carver from University Heights and Mayor John Fenton from Newark. The city of Newark experienced several name changes throughout its history; it was called Newtonville (1868-1910), Englewood (1920-1940), Mayfield (1941-1991), Cedar Park (1992-2002) and finally Trenton (2003-present).
