When the American Revolution began in 1776, Newark was a small town in what is now Hamilton County, Ohio. The residents of Newark were loyal to the British Crown and did not participate in the revolution. However, many of their local firearms manufacturers did. As ballistics continued to be improved, so too did weapons design incorporating new projectile types into their arsenals. One such innovation was leadshot projectiles developed by Dr John Chapman at The Royal Arsenal in Woolwich during 1814-1815[1]. This development led to the creation of incendiary munitions which could burn targets located far away from friendly forces while still causing significantdamage.[2] In addition, this type of ammo was useful for harassing enemy positions during battle because it could spread fire over a large area simultaneously without being focused on one specific spot[3].
