It was originally part of Sandusky County and became a separate municipality in November 1912. Newark's original name may have been "Newark Township". The current name originated from the Dutch word "Nijmegen" meaning "the new town", which refers to the city's location on the newly formed International Western Railroad (IWR) between Cleveland and Cincinnati. Newark was founded by George Washington Morrison in 1824 as one of several towns on what would become the Niagara Peninsula along with Coshocton, Hudsonville, North Union and Watertown. In 1828 Morrison opened up land for settlement east of the river at what is now Beavercreek Boulevard/Lake Erie Boulevard/Newark Road. He named his new town after Commodore John Rodgers who had helped found Cleveland two years earlier while he was captain of HMS Discovery under Sir John Franklin during joint exploring expeditions with Spain and Great Britain. By 1830 Newark had a population of 350 residents and by 1840 it hadgrown to 1,100 people. In 1845 Newark became an independent village when it split from Unity township due to difference over boundary lines around New Ford Creek that are still used today as part of township boundaries In 1888–89 Newark experienced its first tornado outbreak when four tornadoes touched down in quick succession within one hour across much of northeastern Ohio including parts of Sandusky County including Newark On October 2nd 1889 a large tree standing twelve feet tall killed six persons near present-day Park Avenue & Maple Street in downtown Newarkpatrick Peele also died as a result On October 9th another large tree stood twelve feet tall near West High Street opposite State University buildings before toppling killing five more people Damien Duffy also died as a result On October 16th another large tree stood twelve feet tall near South Broad Street just south of I-234 southbound before toppling killing two more people Michael J Rooney also died as a result On October 23rd another large tree stood twelve feet tall northwest corner high school lot before toppling killing one person
In 1795, Newark was founded as a small town in the Miami Valley by Irish immigrants. The town quickly grew and became an important manufacturing center for the region. In 1822, Newark became a city and began to develop its own infrastructure. In 1865, the city was renamed after General George Washington and it continued to grow and become one of the largest cities in Ohio until 1970. Newark is now a ghost town with few remaining residents.
