This event marked the beginning of an era of decline for NewPhiladelphia; although it continued to be a major cultural center until its annexation by Cleveland in 1907, its economy eventually fell victim to industrialization and urban decay. Today, much remains at risk from future development: several blocks adjacent to downtown are currently under threat from proposed high-rise apartments; large areas around Wilson Park are also under threat from redevelopment plans; and parts of downtown have been left abandoned since 1992 when Cleveland replaced NewPhiladelphia with Findlay Market as their main commercial district.Nonetheless, despite these challenges, there is still much that makes NewPhiladelphia special: its rich historical context; wide array of cultural attractions; vibrant community spirit; unparalleled collection of architecture dating back to early 1800s;and many proudly preserved businesses including Wilkinson's Bridge restaurant and music hall which remain among America’s oldest continuously operating restaurants
The area now known as Philadelphia was first settled by the Lenape people in the late 17th century. In 1795, the British established a permanent military garrison at Fort Pitt in what is now Pittsburgh, PA. The following year,Philadelphia became the capital of Pennsylvania and was home to both the state’s House of Representatives and its Senate. The city also became an important commercial center due to its location near the Susquehanna River and on connections with other western settlements. By 1849, Philadelphia had increased its population to over 1 million people and was one of the largest cities in America. In that year, it became part of the newly formed United States of America. During this time, Philadelphia experienced significant economic growth thanks to its status as a key trading partner with Canada and Europe. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Philadelphia saw heavy fighting and damage done to its infrastructure including destroyed bridges and buildings. As a result of these events, Philadelphia’s population decreased significantly during Reconstruction (1867-1875). Afterward, it began to experience rapid urban decay which contributed to its decline during this period.
