In 1825, a group of Ohio entrepreneurs founded the New Philadelphia Observatory on a tract of land they had purchased near present-day Cincinnati. The founders were able to secure the site because it was part of an existing estate that had been abandoned for years and was in need of restoration. After purchasing the property, they began construction on their observatory, which became one of the most successful in the area. The first telescope used at New Philadelphia Observatory was a refracting telescope designed by Captain Samuel Pierpont (1796-1864). It was built in 1828 and used to obtain images of stars and planets. The observatory also made use of a reflecting telescope, which was built in 1835. This instrument allowed astronomers to measure sizes and distances between stars and planets. By 1840, New Philadelphia Observatory had become one of the leading centers for astronomical research in America. In that year, astronomer John Herschel (1786-1868) arrived at the facility to take over operations from Captain Pierpont. He continued to use his reflecting telescope to make important observations concerning stellar evolution and planetary formation. Herschel also constructed a new sky survey instrument called "Atlas" in 1843-44; this instrument allowed him to map out many areas not possible with earlier telescopes. Additionally, he developed methods for measuring extinction coefficients, or how much light is scattered away by substances such as dust particles within our galaxy's atmosphere. His work helped improve our understanding of celestial objects both large and small. Today, it is an Historic District with some remaining architecture from its heyday.
