On November 3, 1803, the first U.S. Census found that New Philadelphia had a population of 706 people. The town was named for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It became a port on the Great Lakes and grew in trade with such countries as England and France. By 1800,New Philadelphia had a population of 1,500 people and by 1810 it had grown to 3,000 residents. In 1814-1815 the town faced an overall economic decline due to operations by Warrants & Company which were then based in London but operated out of New York City until they were forced to dissolution in 1830 by American law following the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). This company's activities led to increased competition among merchants within New Philadelphia for transportation resources along with land speculation which caused much social unrest at its peak between 1814-1815; however this did not prevent New Philadelphia from continuing to thrive economically during this time period as well as continue being one of the most important commercial hubs on the Great Lakes region
