New Philadelphia, Ohio is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is bordered by the Lake Erie shoreline to the south and west, and by Pennsylvania to the north. The town was established in 1824 as a trading post on the southern end of what is now known as New Philadelphia Harbor. In 1829, it was renamed for George Washington after his visit to that area. The first settlers in New Philadelphia were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians who had come overland from Ireland during the early 1800s. Afterward, waves of German immigrants arrived, followed soon thereafter by Scandinavian immigrants. By 1860, there were more than 100 people living in New Philadelphia. As the population grew and commerce expanded throughout the region, self-defense became a necessity for some residents. Some merchants began to arm themselves with firearms for protection against Indian raids or other threats. The first handgun laws were passed in Michigan in 1871 and Ohio in 1875; both states adopted them as part of their effort to control gun violence within their borders. New Philadelphia was founded on October 16, 1795 by Christopher Wintcott and his brother-in-law James Caldwell as a small township in Athens County () around present day West Park Avenue and East Market Street. On November 1, 1796, it became an incorporated town under the name of Newark Township. In 1802, Delaware Township was organized adjacent to New Philadelphia and also included parts of what is now Dayton. In 1836, all of Athens County except Newark Township were combined with Scioto County to form new Union County; Newark Township remained within Scioto until 1840 when it joined Adams County as well. In 1851 both Newark Township and Delaware Township were merged into become Jenkinsville Township while Adams remains within Scioto until 1862 when he too became a part of Union county. On December 15th, 1912 New Philadelphia experienced its first tornado outbreak which killed one person and injured several others
