In 1802–1803, surveyors laid out streets and blocks within what would become downtown New Philadelphia. On December 10th, 1803, James Watson founded an early factory here called Watson & Son Foundry & Machine Works (later known as Alcoa) on Second Street NW which became one of America's largest manufacturing plants during the 19th century. When two brothers named John Fenton bought land adjacent to Watson's plant in 1811 they also started a foundry business there too –both businesses continued until 1920 when Alcoa decided to move their operations away from Cleveland due to competition from American Motors Corporation (AMC). This event not only destroyed much community fabric but also led to many people moving away or changing their allegiance while living in NewPhiladelphia; however some elements such as architecture remain popular among locals today alluding to its once thriving industrial past This includes many historic buildings like Prentiss-Hague House which served as both a hotel/motel and courthouse until 1974 when it was razed following condemnation by then Mayor Tom Barrett for being dilapidated .
