New Philadelphia, Ohio was founded in 1795 by Dutch immigrants. The town was named after Philadelphia, Pennsylvania because of its similarity in layout to that city. In 1814, the United States acquired New Philadelphia from Great Britain and renamed it Columbus Township. The township had a population of about 2,000 people when it was purchased from the British. The first school in NewPhiladelphia was opened in 1816. Until the late 1800s, most residents were farmers and their families relied on hoes, axes and farming implements to do their work. During the 19th century, knife production began to grow in NewPhiladelphia as settlers discovered how useful knives could be for various tasks such as farming and defense. Knife production continued to increase until around 1910 when World War I brought increased demand for military knives which led to a decline in knife production at the local level. After World War I ended, new techniques emerged which led to a resurgence of knife production throughout America as Victorinox became one of the leading manufacturers of knifes during this time period. New Philadelphia, Ohio is a town in the Miami-Dade County, Florida metropolitan area and was founded on November 3, 1836. The population of New Philadelphia was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami Beach–Doral Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which had been hit hard by the Panic of 1837. In order to provide some relief for those affected by the Panic, Congress passed an act on February 14, 1838 naming New Philadelphia as a financial center for southwestern Ohio. The town's founder and first mayor George Washington Reynolds donated land in what is now known as downtown to establish a new city hall and firehouse. The original plat map from that time indicates that there were only two houses in New Philadelphia when it was founded. In 1839 President James K. The city's importance continued to grow as it became the regional center for trade with Western Pennsylvania and the Midwestern United States. In 1823, New Philadelphia was incorporated as a village within what would eventually become Cincinnati. From its inception until its incorporation into Cincinnati, New Philadelphia thrived as an agricultural communitydependent on land sales and crop production. Over time, however, NewPhiladelphia experienced dramatic demographic changes due to waves of immigrants from Eastern Europe who sought refuge in America during the era of political instability that characterized much of the late 19th century. As new arrivals arrived they changed the complexion of New Philadelphia by assimilating quickly into American society. This process created some tensions between newcomers and established residents which helped to contribute to the city's rapid growth in later years. In 1902, when Cincinnati became an independent city, NewPhiladelphia was dissolved along with all other villages within its borders because they were not part of Mayor John Waddy's "new charter" program designed to improve downtown neighborhoods while preserving traditional values in order to promote economic development. Despite this dissolution, many aspects associated with NewPhiladelphia remains today including its strong civic tradition; thriving culture industry; prominent architecture firms such as Neumann & Abrahams LLP; and numerous local businesses including Macy’s Department Store (now known as Nordstrom) and Sears real estate company
