In 1810, in the town of New Philadelphia, Ohio, a company was formed to build a new canal. The canal would be much larger than any that had been built before and it would provide transportation for goods and people between the eastern and western parts of the United States. The company was called the Canal Company of New Philadelphia. The canal was completed in 1817 and it became an important trade artery between the eastern and western parts of the United States. It also allowed for faster transportation times between cities because there were no rivers or canals blocking access to key markets.
New Philadelphia, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross Township. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Philadelphia was founded in 1811 as a trading post on the Great Miami River by fur trader David Wilkinson and his brother-in-law, Alexander Findlay. The town grew quickly due to its location near major water routes and its easy access to trade with other states. By 1825, New Philadelphia had a population of 1,500 people and became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1800s because it offered safe passage from slavery into Canada for fugitive slaves. On July 7, 1827, New Philadelphia became a city when it was ratified by an act of the General Assembly of Ohio as such under license from United States Congress. In 1830 City Council voted to change its name to Dayton after President James Kieft's home town in New York Colony (now Syracuse). On October 3rd that year Dayton voters approved changing their name to Dayton after President Andrew Johnson's home town in Alabama (now Birmingham). In 1838 Union Major Jeremiah Cushing laid out a new township west of NewPhiladelphia called Medina County which included much of what is now Ross Township including present day NewPhiladelphia proper along with land beyond present day Springbrook Circle eastward until reaching today's North College Avenue between North College Road and South University Drive NW; this area then extended west past today's Park Avenue SW through today's West Liberty University neighborhood before terminating at today's Keystone Boulevard NE cornering Indian Creek Strip northward all within Ross Township limits; thus Medina County formed two completely separate townships but still were considered part of Ross Township for all purposes including taxation purposes until 1912 when they were merged into one municipality by ordinance effective January 1st., 1913 having previously been divided into two tracts or "cells" pursuant to Act #2145 passed by then Mayor John Fenton who desired To provide more equitable development within both municipalities while also providing more efficient government services not available within either village/township setting alone so as improve residents' qualityoflife while also maintaining municipal efficiency thereby creating one cohesive entity statewide known as "Ross Township Municipal Government". The first school in what would become downtown Dayton opened in 1829 on First Street just south of Scranton Road southwest Of Washington Street being taught by Rev G E Mclntyre with 20 students enrolled grades 1-8 using log classrooms heated by open fires throughout winter months below freezing weather conditions! The first high school built in what would become downtown Dayton opened enrollmentally on May 15th 1830 in use as “Old Main” High School which served grades 9-12 for over 50 years until replaced circa 1960s with current structure making it one of only two high schools existing remaining wholly within city limits along with Wright State Univ! This building currently houses variousadult recreational uses eGroups meetings etc![1]

After the war ended in 1919, New Philadelphia regained some of its prosperity thanks to new industrial developments that began developing around downtown. However, during the 1970s and 1980s significant declines took place in both the city’s GDP and employment levels; these have yet to reverse since then. While not without challenges (such as a high rate of crime), New Philadelphia is still one of Ohio’s most vibrant cities full of history and culture
New Philadelphia was founded in 1795, and became a town in 1802. It was part of the Northwest Territory until it was organized as a county in 1803. In 1825, New Philadelphia became the capital of Ohio.
