In 1866, New Philadelphia was founded on the Scioto River by James A. Cook and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its location along a major trade route and its easy access to markets in Cincinnati and Dayton. By 1875, New Philadelphia had a population of over 1,500 people and was considered one of the most prosperous communities in Ohio. New Philadelphia, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Fayette County. The population was 23,711 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Fayette County by population. New Philadelphia is located on the Scioto River near its confluence with the Muskingum River. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become New Philadelphia was John Taylor who arrived in 1788. He named his new town after his brother-in-law George Washington who had served as commander of forces during the American Revolution and died two years earlier at age 71 from an illness at Mount Vernon estate near Alexandria, Virginia. In 1802, General George Stephenson built a sawmill and warehouse on millsdam across from Old Fort Pitt for textiles Manufacturer Andrew Mellon which became known as Mellon Hall. The community grew rapidly due to its location on a major trade route and its convenient transportation links to Akron and other cities within 100 miles (160 km). In 1814, local farmers produced maize for export to Mexico; this led to increased trade through New Philadelphia along what would become known as "the old road" or "the main route." Thistrade corridor facilitated goods movement between central Ohio and Mexico City overland via wagons drawn by horses or mules over high mountain passes which took weeks or even months because of difficult travel conditions during wintertime when roads were covered with snowfall deep into Mexico City. During World War II, munitions production was contracted out by companies such as United States Steel Corporation's Munitions Plant No. 1 (now Partick) on West Side Road east of present day downtown NewPhiladelphia; these plants manufactured artillery shells, torpedoes, rockets and other war materiel used by America's allies including Great Britain and Japan throughout World War II . After hostilities ceased in 1945 many factories closed but some continued operation until they were mothballed in 1951 due to economic recession resultant from Cold War competition Among industrialized countries post-war Europe had experienced more technological advance than America did so manufacturing shutters came down on many American blast furnaces that could have reopened produce back into consumer markets . Howeverolph Jansky who ran United States Steel Corp.'s Munitions Plant No.1 during wartime wrote: "I am not sure if we ever really stopped producing weapons while [USA military] was fighting overseas" later adding that: "There wasn't much demand for them once we got home" Today there are several large employers in downtown area including US Steel Corporation's Munitions Plant Nos 1 & 2 (formerly Partick), Consol Energy Inc., Erie County Community College District #2A & Erie County Community College District #3D all constituent parts of Mohawk Valley Conference Center Incorporated which has multiple businesses across three levels totaling 612 square feet with twenty currently open spaces inside conference center making it one of largest gathering points for small business owners throughout Southern Ohio

In 1827, Congress passed an act providing for economic development in central Ohio through loans and grants to private individuals and companies. This helped to improve NewPhiladelphia’s infrastructure and create jobs that supported its population growth. During World War II, New Philadelphia was an important manufacturing center for munitions production. After the war ended, however, the city lost many of its businesses due to competition from larger cities such as Cleveland and Akron. In recent years, however, NewPhiladelphia has regained some of its lost glory as a world-renowned cultural destination enjoyed by residents and tourists alike.
New Philadelphia was founded in 1795 as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1801, it became a town in the United States. The city was named for General James Wilkinson, who had helped found Cincinnati. New Philadelphia was destroyed by a fire in 1906 and rebuilt with public funds.
