In 1846, two men named George Washington and Christopher Columbus discovered the Ohio River in what is now New Philadelphia, Ohio. They named their new settlement after the river and its tributaries - New Philadelphia on the Scioto River. The town's location made it a convenient stop for travelers on their way to Cincinnati or Pittsburgh. In 1853, the Erie Canal was completed and NewPhiladelphia became an important shipping point. The town experienced some growth during World War II. It was home to several military installations, including Fort Myer and Fort Sheridan. The population of New Philadelphia peaked at over 10,000 in 1945, but declined markedly following the war. However, it has since rebounded somewhat due to its proximity to Cincinnati andPittsburgh. Today, New Philadelphia is a small community with a strong sense of community pride. Its residents are engaged in many different aspects of their local economy - from manufacturing to agriculture to tourism - which has helped keep the town vibrant and active throughout its history.

After the war, many of these residents decided that they would rather move away from their hometown and start anew than live under dictatorship again. However, when America regained its independence in 1947, many new residents decided that they wanted their old hometown back – so they started redevelopment efforts once again. Today, New Philadelphia is an important cultural center located just outside of Cincinnati proper – home to some of Ohio's most popular attractions such as The Gilded Age Museum and Art Gallery (a replica of President James Buchanan's former home), The Pennsylvania Dutch Village Museum (the only surviving Dutch settlement in America), and The Cincinnati Performing Arts Center (home to world-renowned theater programs). It is also a major tourist destination with numerous festivals hosted each year including Columbus Day Parade & Festival (largest parade in city), Oktoberfest celebration at amphibious park nearby, Shakespeare Festival at University Park - headlined by performances from London's Royal Shakespeare Company - among others!

The town grew slowly until it became a major transportation center in the mid-19th century. New Philadelphia was renamed Philadelphia in 1814, after the city ofPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1845, New Philadelphia became an incorporated community and was renamed Columbus after Ohio's first state capital. In 1870, New Philadelphia became part of the newly created Dayton Township. In 1911, Dayton Township merged with other township to form Athens County. In 1920, Athens County disbanded and NewPhiladelphia reverted back to its original name of Philadelphia.
