Polk as part of his effort to gain territory for Illinois during the Louisiana Purchase process. The town site lies on what had been part of Ottawa Township before it became Butler County in 1801 when that township was split off from Ottawa County following its creation from parts of Johnson Township, Lebanon Township, Clearfield Township, West Allis Township and East Allis Township which had all been organized as townships prior to statehood. At its founding it contained only one structure - a few log cabins used for storage during wintertime - but rapidly developed into a prosperous small town with numerous businesses including mills (earthenwaremaking being especially important), schools (one school serving gradeschool-12th grade), churches (an Episcopal church built in 1802) and residences for wealthy farmers and other settlers who arrived in high numbers during President James K. Polk's term as president from 1841-1849 inclusive! The railroads arrived shortly afterwards providing transportation not just for goods but also passengers! New Philadelphia quickly became an important center for trade with neighboring towns such as Miamisburg and Youngstown! In addition to becoming home to many famous Americans such as General Ulysses S Grant when he served briefly in office there between 1865-1869 or Drury Latham Library & Museum founder Lewis Hine who donated his landmark building at 2244 Elm Street – still extant today – new residents also brought their own unique flavor which can be observed throughout today's community! One example is noted clothing store owner Ozzie Smith who opened up shop adjacent to Parma High School starting out with just five cases each! Others include VFW Post #9709 whose commander Cornelius Vanderbilt contributed $5 per case towards building fund back when that post operated entirely without electricity or running water until 1904 !!! Today’s VFW Post #10953 boasts more than 20 locations across Northeast Ohio !!! Another example includes Sheetz convenience store chain owner John Simons who started out selling candy bars beforeopening up his first restaurant called Johnny Appleseed’s place which served Americanized Italian cuisine until 1978 !!
