Mount Vernon is a small community in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Combined Statistical Area. Mount Vernon is on the southern edge of Summit Township and north of Norwalk Township. The first permanent settler in what would become Mount Vernon was James Robertson in 1792. He built a cabin on the east side of town which still stands today as a museum property known as "Robertson's Cabin". The original settlers were all Presbyterians and their families worshipped at nearby Saint John's Episcopal Church until 1801 when they moved to Mount Washington where they continued to worship until 1804 when they left for good because of religious persecution by local Quakers. In 1803, Captain Christopher Gadsden donated land to be developed into what became Mount Vernon Hundred. In 1821, James Robertson donated another piece of land to be developed into what would become Mount Vernon Township (later Norwalk Township). The first post office was established at Mount Vernon in 1825 and it remained operational until 1906. Most of the early residents were farmers who raised corn, wheat, oats, tobacco and other crops; however, some began developing industry such as lumbering and brewing during the 19th century. By 1900 there were only three homes remaining in town – one being occupied by Robertsons descendants that year – while over 100 businesses had been founded along with schools and churches serving the community over a period of more than 120 years including two periods without school or church services due to World War I and World War II respectively! Today MtVernon is an agricultural center with many family-owned businesses supplying goods throughout Northeast Ohio; it also has numerous cultural attractions including several museums which offer exhibits about village life before Prohibition made alcohol illegal in 1920s America - providing insight into how everyday life functioned behind bars during this time period! Mount Vernon is a village in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,850 at the 2010 census. The Village of Mount Vernon was formed by a merger on November 3, 1915 of the villages of Arlington Heights and Mount Vernon. The first settler in what is now Mount Vernon was Levi Coffin who arrived in 1796. He and his family were among the earliest Europeans to settle in Stark County. In 1814, John Coffin bought from David Chauncey 2/8 mile (1 km) east of present-day Mount Vernon Township three hundred acres (12 hectares) of land which he donated to the Methodist church for use as a school yard. When Jackson Township was organized in 1827, part of it included two tracts of land that were then known as "Coffin's School Yard." One reason why Mount Vernon became so important early on was its location close to trade routes and other important settlements such as Athens and Cincinnati. By 1800, there were over 25 different stores and businesses located within one mile (1 km) of where today's Mount Vernon resides. This commerce helped support both the growth and development of this small town during its early years. One particular landmark that has been associated withMount Vernon since its earliest days is the Old Masonic Lodge which burned down in 1892 while being used as a theater by local actors. It had been rebuilt soon afterwards but caught on fire again just two years later before finally being destroyed completely by arson in 1896. Today only fragments remain standing including some foundations which can be seen near Interstate 71 between Parkersburg and Independence! The area around present-day Mt Vernon experienced significant growth after World War II thanks to the influx of new residents - many who came to work at nearby factories or post offices during wartime boom times. Many families also moved into these new homes because they could not find affordable housing back home anymore – an experience that is still remembered today by those who live hereabouts!
