In 1853, the Mount Vernon Township trustees voted to erect a schoolhouse andifle on the corner of High Street and Ligonier Avenue. The school first opened in September of that year. In 1855, a Mr. Bigham donated land at the southeast corner of High Street and Ligonier Avenue for a public park which would eventually become Waterfront Park. The new park was dedicated on July 4th, 1857. In 1865, Mrs. Hargrave donated land to the township for a cemetery which is now known as Mount Vernon Cemetery. In 1888, James Ahern offered to donate land at the northeast corner of High Street and State Road 3 for an amusement park which became Ohio Stadium. On May 11th, 1890, John Daugherty donated lumber to build the first Mount Vernon dam which impounds Beaver Creek (now called Mahoning River). Fast forward to today and there are still many interesting artifacts left from when Mt Vernon was initially populated! One such item is the Old School House located at 411 High St., formerly known as "The White House." This old structure was built in 1851 by Capt. Hiram Pease and his family after they moved from Vermont into what is now Mount Vernon Township. It served as a local magistrate’s office until 1861 when it was replaced by a new building designed by Ebenezer Howard Jr.. After being used as storage space for several years it was purchased by Mrs. Lewis in 1896 and turned into her home until she passed away in 1907-08 . Today it serves as part of the township museum . Another significant items from this era includes Elisha Cook’s Tavern located at 607 Wabash Ave., once owned by George Washington Carver who also operated various businesses including bakery etc.. It burned down in 1906 but not before leaving behind quite a few interesting items including ovens used during bake sales inside!
