The Mount Vernon Rifle Company was founded in 1836 by three men who had come to the area from Indiana. The company produced rifles and shotguns for local farmers and hunters, and also exported their products. It was eventually acquired by the rifle company of Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1857. After Springfield's closure in 1866, the Mount Vernon Rifle Company continued to produce firearms under its own name until it merged with another rifle company in 1905.
Mount Vernon is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in Hamilton County. The name Mount Vernon comes from the Battle of Monmouth Heights on July 14, 1776, during the American Revolution. The battle was fought near present-day Mount Vernon Township and Monmouth County. British General Howe's army had been pursuing Washington's forces all day before reaching Monmouth Heights around dusk on July 13. When they reached the height of the hill, Washington's cavalry rode up to within bowshot of Howe's infantry and began shooting indiscriminately at any soldiers who moved. This caused panic among Howe's troops, which led to their rout and flight back down the mountain into Jersey Hill country behind Howard Manor (present-day West Hanover Township). Washington quickly gathered his complement of about 100 men and mounted them into two lines parallel to each other along a ravine between Mount Lebanon and Harperstown hills. Then he ordered them to fire upon every Britishman within range; many shots were fired even though there were no British soldiers in sight. After reloading his pistols several times, Washington led his line forward again across Harperstown Hills towards Monmouth Heights where he placed himself between two high buildings on either side of an open field leading down to what is now Mount Vernon Cemetery (now part of Princeton University). There he took cover with his company until nightfall when he withdrew back up Harperstown Hills under cover of darkness without loss or casualty aboard his horse Artemas.—[John Adams]
