The Mount Vernon Historical Society was started in 1906 by Ole H. Rasmussen, a prosperous farmer and trustee of the local high school. In 1916, Rasmussen donated the land for the first municipally-operated public library in Mount Vernon. The society purchased books from the city of Cleveland's Public Library and began to loan them out to residents on a continuing basis. In 1928, the society purchased its first collection of drawings, sculptures, and artworks from Mrs. Edwin Schieffer, widow of United States Senator James Pappas (1906-1976).

As of 2010, its population had decreased to 7,819 according to the U.S. Census Bureau report "Historical Population Reports - Mount Vernon Township", which downsized from its estimated 10,000 residents before 1960 due to annexation by Arlington Heights (the largest city in Northern Illinois). Prior to this merger there were few if any stops along Route 66 outside of Mount Vernonvillage; now all but one stop is within Arlington Heights limits or close at hand including Jefferson Road exit on I-94 South near Watertown "Inbound traffic stopped at: Outbound traffic continued without stopping."
On July 4, 1792, the United States of America was founded. Mount Vernon became a national monument in 1847 and is now a tourist attraction.
