Mount Vernon was founded in 1792 by Major General George Washington and his wife Martha. The town was named for Mount Vernon, the estate of Lord Fairfax, which Washington purchased from John Adams. The first courthouse in Mount Vernon was built in 1802 and the first public school opened in 1807. The town had a population of about 150 people when it became a city in 1907. By 1920, Mount Vernon had a population of 3,000 people and it became an official city with its own government in 1926. In 1970, Mount Vernon merged with the neighboring town of Portsmouth to form the present-day city of Mount Vernon–Portsmouth. Mount Vernon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 712 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. In 1932, Congress designated Mount Vernon as a National Historical Park; it remains so today despite efforts by local residents to demolish many of the park's historical buildings over time.

Dickinson's son-in-law James Kapp erected another frame house on land adjoining today's Greenfield Road just west of present day Clairmont Elementary School before 1830s due to lack of agriculture northwest then Columbus area being available for settlement
