Mount Vernon is a small town in the northern part of Ohio, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It lies in Lucas County and is bordered by Findlay to the north, Zanesville to the east, and Grandview Heights to the south. The first permanent settler in Mount Vernon was Ebenezer Richardson in 1796. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street. The first post office was established in 1807 and was called "Richardsonville." In 1815, John Stephenson opened a general store there and named it after himself. A post office operated under the name of "Mount Vernon" from 1827 until it closed in 1898. The town became an incorporated village in 1907. It had a population of 1,193 as of 2000 census; however, this number has since decreased due to its recent decline in population importance. In 1911, Mount Vernon began construction on what would become its only high school buildings- one classroom building and four gymnasiums/areas for physical education classes were built with money donated by local business owners who saw potential for development around the school site. Classes began operations on September 15th that same year with nineteen students attending from thirteen different townships within Lucas County; these classes were held at various locations within town limits before moving into their new buildings starting December 1st that year which were completed fourteen weeks early due to heavy snowfall throughout the winter months which hampered normal school operations considerably In 1916-17 Einar Holmberg served as Superintendent of Schools for Mount Vernon during which time he oversaw extensive renovation or reconstruction of all six classrooms (the original building having been destroyed by fire) as well as addition of three more laboratories including one dedicated to chemistry and another for physics For his many years service thereto Mr Holmberg will always be remembered especially those five winters when temperatures topped fifty degreesomaly both inside and outside our brick building Mrs Holmberg handled all domestic chores while her husband attended SCHOOL Mon-Fri 9am-3pm & washed & ironed clothes during his free time if necessary !! All children learn good morals through hard work !! After World War I ended many young men left home to enter military service so less opportunities remained available for families like ours to send their children to School also we started having schools out West teaching kids about agriculture so they could get some skills during their working lives We are very blessed today with excellent public education System
