Mount Vernon is a small town in the counties of Holmes and Medina, in the state of Ohio. The population was 5,024 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati metropolitan area. Mount Vernon was founded by General Ulysses S. Grant in 1814 on land that he had confiscated from Native Americans. The first settler in Mount Vernon was Jonathan Edwards, who arrived in 1795 with his family from Northampton County, Massachusetts. He built a log cabin on what is now Second Street and Main Street. Other early settlers included Nicholas Hill (1797-1869), Jonas Jameson (1799-1872), Hiram Gurney (1801-1882), John Fenton (1802-1903) and Job Stuart (c. 1810-?). In 1814, General Ulysses S. Grant moved his headquarters from Utica to Mount Vernon after taking command of United States forces during the War for Independence. He ordered that all Indian property be seized and redistributed among American citizens, including some 4,000 acres (1 km2) belonging to Chief Ottawa at present day Friendship Heights within Mount Vernon limits. The Grants made numerous contributions to Mount Vernon over ensuing years: they donated land for a schoolhouse, erected a church and other buildings, laid out streets and platted many homes around their neighborhood which remain today as part of downtown Mount Vernon's core business district known as "Granttown." Grant later served as Mayor of Cincinnati from 1865 until his death in 1869; he also endowedMountVernon Academy which still operates today onGranttown Road adjacent to City Hall Annex Building/Old Post Office). In addition to his political activities and philanthropy, General Grant also played an important role in developing MtVernon into one of America's most influential towns through various civic organizations such as the Masonic Lodge #527 ϠFΐD&#A0Masons., Odd Fellows' Lodge #369FϠE(&#A0Odd Fellows'), Presbyterian Church (#3294 & #992PepublicanChurchOfMountVernon), American Anti-Slavery Society (#2792 & #992ASaveryAntiSlaverySociety)and Disabled American Veterans League (#7014 & #992DDAVELeague). In 1795, the first home on Mount Vernon was built. It was a cabin by John Adams. The home was destroyed in 1812 by a fire. In 1815, Benjamin Rush built a house on the same site. The first physician in Mount Vernon, Dr. Samuel Johnson, lived there from 1796 to 1800. In 1830, the family of Ulysses S. Grant moved into the house and used it as their presidential home from 1845 to 1865. The house burned down in 1875 but was replaced with another structure that still stands today - the current Mount Vernon House is one of Ohio's most popular tourist destinations and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.
