The Mount Vernon Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1892. It was the first rifle club in Mount Vernon, and it operated out of a private home on Beaver Street. The club was disbanded in 1907, but it was reactivated in 1912 and continued to operate until World War II. The club had a total of ninety-six members at its peak.
Mount Vernon is a small town in the southern portion of Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Mount Vernon is part of the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Mount Vernon was James Robertson who arrived in 1788. He built a cabin on the hill which now fronts Main Street. The town was platted in 1812 by John Cranch and named after Washington's home state of Virginia. When Ohio became a state in 1813, Mount Vernon became its capital and it has been its seat ever since. In 1814, Washington purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) of land east of present-day Mount Vernon from Jonathan Dayton for $10 per acre ($ ). This land would eventually become known as West Side Park. In 1830, he donated 5 acres (2 ha) to the town for use as a public graveyard. The first school in Mount Vernon was built on Elm Street between Main and Market Streets in 1827 by Reverend Ezra Stroudtzer with help from local farmers and their children. Reverend Stroudtzer served as teacher and principal until his death in 1840; his students took over his duties until he could no longer teach due to an illness that struck him while traveling to Cincinnati for an outdoor sermon on October 3rd 1850). A second school building was erected on High Street between First Avenue and Third Avenue around 1836 by Nicholas Henshall using money raised through patriotic fundraising drives led by citizens such as John Witherspoon Sr., founder of Witherspoon's grocery store on High Street across frompresent day State Capitol Building). Mount Vernon was a small trading post and military base located on the east bank of the Ohio River in present day Mount Vernon, Ohio. The post was established by General George Washington in 1778 as a staging ground for his army during the French and Indian War. It served as an encampment for the troops until 1781, when it became an actual military outpost. After the war, Washington moved his headquarters to Fort Necessity on the west bank of the river and Mount Vernon reverted to civilian use. In 1815, Mount Vernon was purchased by James K. Polk from Nicholas Clymer for $10,000. In 1826, President John Quincy Adams transferred part of Mount Vernon's land to be used as a national cemetery for American Revolutionary War veterans. The following year, Congress passed legislation annexing portions of Medina County to form Ohio Territory. In 1827, Mount Vernon was made part of Cincinnati and remained so until its sale to Edward Husted in 1851. During World War II, Mount Vernon played an important role in providing shelter for many soldiers who were fleeing Nazi Germany while stationed in Europe. The command Post Annexation Unit (CPAU) at Mount Vernon provided safehouses and living quarters for up to 1,500 military men between 1940-1945. Today remnants of CPAU are still visible throughout town - including a Training School which served as barracks for Troop E-36 (the “Golden Girls”) during their training days at nearby Wright-Patterson AFB before they joined America’s fight against Japan starting WW2!
In 1790, the area that is now Mount Vernon was part of the Northwest Territory. In 1803, Ohio became a state and in 1815, it was renamed Mount Vernon after George Washington. The first school on the property was founded in 1814. The present day Mount Vernon Elementary School opened in 1912.
