The GE property became home to Mount Vernon Village after GE sold its interest to Cleveland Edison Co., which then merged with American Electric Power Company (AEP) to form Tri-State Energy Company Ltd., one of the largest electric utilities in America during that era. In 1972 AEP divested itself of Tri-State Energy Company Ltd., renaming it Cincinnati Gas & Electric Corporation which remains one of Cincinnati's major providers today for energy services with over 350 miles of transmission lines carrying electricity from generation sites all over Ohio! Mount Vernon, Ohio is a city located in the westcentral portion of the United States on the Scioto River. It was founded by General George Washington in 1792 and named for his patron saint, Mount Vernon Abbey in England. The city has a population of 68,591 as of 2018. The first settler in what is now Mount Vernon was Nicholas Vail, who arrived in 1789 from Virginia. In 1800, John Marshall built the first courthouse and tavern here. In 1803, Congress passed the Organic Act establishing Mount Vernon as an incorporated town with its own board of education and government. The following year, Alexander Hamilton moved to Mount Vernon from New York City after becoming a congressman there. After Hamilton's death in 1804, Edward Everett became the new congressman and soon began to promote development of Mount Vernon as a fashionable resort town on the riverfront. By 1815, most of what is now downtown had been built up; however, Everett continued to promote development until his death in 1828. Development resumed under Mayor James Kapp when he took office in 1830; during his tenure important new business districts were established along Pennsylvania Avenue and near Union Station (now Wabash Avenue). By 1840 all but one block east of then-Broad Street had been developed; however much further east only about two-thirds of what is now downtown remained undeveloped because it was covered by forestland at that time. In 1850–51 an extensive program to remove trees around downtown resulted in nearly two acres (0.8 hectares) being leveled off between Broad and State streets; this area served as Washington Park today. A few years later another major program removed more than 100 trees near Union Station so that today's Federal Triangle is visible across University Circle from Capitol Hill down to Pennsylvania Avenue.] Mount Vernon experienced some significant growth during its early years – houses were erected rapidly on land leased from wealthy families or purchased outright – although there were occasional challenges along the way including hostility towards efforts by developers to build streetcar lines through town center or annex churchesheiks into their homes (euphemistically called "building projects"). However local resistance eventually gave way to appreciation for both Commerce Township’s rich natural resources – including coal mining operations that operated intermittently until well after World War II – as well as its potential for economic development thanks largely to federal investment fostered by Congressman Everett’s advocacy.[1] Although commerce declined somewhat thereafter due mainly to technological advances [the railroad came through town], Mount Vernon quickly emerged as one of America’s leading commercial communities well before Cleveland became America’s second largest metropolis just over 50 years later![2] Today admirers continue To honor George Washington & many famous people associated w/his life at MtVernon suchas Thomas Edison
