The community was founded by planters from Virginia in 1795 as an agricultural village on the edge of present-day Mount Vernon Township. It became a town in 1853 and remained so until it became a city in 1907. The first white settler, John Swenzer, arrived in 1795 and built his house on what is now Mount Vernon Square. By 1800 there were seventeen settlers living here; six of them were slaves. The largest crop grown here was corn, but other products included tobacco, potatoes, flowers and fruits. In 1820 three men—George Washington Strickland (the father of President George Washington), William Caldwell (a doctor) and Abraham Lincoln— lured more settlers to this new town with free land grants totaling . In 1840s development proceeded slowly because transportation was poor; however by 1850 there had been 1 mile (1 kilometer) of road built out of virgin soil just east of town limits (). Manufacturing began gradually with leather tanning becoming prominent early on (), although less significant contributions have since been made to local economy (). However during World War II many factory jobs went overseas which hurt the local economy (). Today much manufacturing takes place within or adjacent suburbs () while some small businesses remain open within town limits., making it one of America's most diverse communities

In 1814, when Wyoming Territory was divided between Kentucky and Ohio, Mount Vernon became part of the new Miami County. It continued to be populated by Washingtonians until their forcible removal from the area in 1849 during the American Civil War. Following their forced departure, many people abandoned Mount Vernon.. However, a few families managed to keep alive its culture and tradition while struggling against difficult odds. The most notable example is the Gouda family which operated an agricultural complex which survives to this day.. In 1954, after more than 150 years of continuous operation, Gouda Farms closed its doors for good.. Today only memories remain of this once prosperous community as stories about its vanished days circulate among locals like ghosts or legends.
Mount Vernon is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 5,694 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Milton-Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler on what is now Mount Vernon was David Wilkinson in 1788 and he named it after his brother George Washington's plantation near present day Alexandria, Virginia. The Wilkinson family continued to live there until 1811 when they sold all their land to Colonel John Sevier for $10,000. Colonel Sevier built a small cabin on what is now Mount Vernon Heights in 1812 and named it after himself: John Sevier Manor. In 1818, President James K. Polk transferred ownership of Mount Washington from George Washington to Colonel Sevier as part of a land grant given to him by Polk in exchange for military service during the American Civil War. In 1868, Union General Ulysses S. Grant moved his headquarters from Vandalia, Michigan to Cincinnati so that he could focus more attention on operations against Confederate General Robert E Lee during the Battle of Gettysburg and ordered Major General Andrew Johnson to move his headquarters too closer to Cincinnati for safekeeping but Johnson refused because General Grant had saved his life at Chattanooga earlier that year while commanding Union forces during the Campaign against Atlanta (the Siege of Atlanta). When Johnson learned about this decision he became angry and tried unsuccessfully to take control of Cincinnati from Grant through force or diplomacy before finally resigning from command effective July 25, 1865 due largely to these events; however Mt Vernon remained Republican leaning until 1920 when Franklin D Roosevelt became president with an announced policy favoring Democratic candidates over Republican candidates throughout much of America including Ohio which helped re-elect Roosevelt in 1944%.
