The city is the fourth-largest in Montgomery County and one of its five municipalities. It was founded in 1814 as a small Settlement on what is now Montgomeryshire Road by General James Robertson and his family, who were pioneers in settler movement westward from Kentucky through what is now West Virginia and Pennsylvania to establish new fur trades posts at Fort desire (now Pittsburgh) on the Allegheny River. The town grew quickly due to its location at a crossroads for wagon traffic between Cincinnati, Dayton, and Chicago; its citizens built mills, churches, schools, stores and homes around a courthouse square that still stands today. The community's first mayor was John Fenton (1814-1824), who served two terms after being elected as part of an unsuccessful effort by local officials to gain national recognition for Montgomeryshire Roads development as a national route connecting points along the Great Lakes watershed. In 1825 Fenton convinced Congress to make Montgomery County independent from Dayton County so that it could better serve as an engine for economic development within its borders. The creation of Montgomery County also gave rise to claims by some residents that they had been taken advantage of financially during their time as part of Dayton's larger rural demographic majority while their counterparts in nearby Butler or Franklin counties enjoyed preferential treatment when it came to infrastructure development or land acquisition opportunities. Montgomery is a town in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. The name "Montgomery" comes from George Washington's estate in nearby Mount Vernon and its location on the east side of the Monongahela River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Montgomery were French traders in 1701 who named it for General James Montresor, commander of British forces in North America during the Seven Years' War. In 1800, John Cockerill established a trading post here and named it Fort Cockerill after himself; later this post was moved to Georgetown. A log cabin was built here by Ebenezer Perry on December 12, 1802 as part of his claim to land along the Monongahela River that he had purchased from a group of Native Americans about forty miles south of present-day Montgomery. In 1803, an act was passed by Congress providing for a township to be formed out of parts of Loudoun and Fairfax counties and within one year it had been organized into two townships: Mount Vernon Township on the east side of the river and Georgetown Township on the west side – both with their own assembly districts (later called wards). On March 6, 1804, these two townships merged into one under new government regulations adopted due to growing population density and lack of space in both areas. The first settler in what is now Montgomery was John Greenleaf Whipple who arrived sometime between 1798 and 1800 via boat from Boston. He founded an unsuccessful mercantile enterprise here before moving upriver for more fertile land around Cumberlandtowns Landing on July 14th 1830 - three days after General David Denny’s Expedition arrived at Point Pleasant Plantation upstream from today’s town site. whipple’s landing may have been inspired by George Washington’s experience as Commander-in-Chief during his crossing overland from Alexandria through Virginia en route to New York City following his defeat at Yorktown near Williamsburg VA on September 11th 1781; Washington rode through Cumberlandtowns Landing that day just hours before his army reached Point Pleasant Plantation across the Potomac River some , six miles downstream from where Whipple landed his party twelve days earlier! One theory holds that Dingwaller Lake – located immediately northwest of present day Greenleaf Village – is connected directly with Yorktown Battlefield today via buried earth…A second theory suggests that Dingwaller Lake constitutes part or all of modern day Greenleaf Village which lies atop an ancient hillock located approximately southeastof present day Greenleaf Village….Today there are several small businesses dotting Interstate 71 close to various parks/government offices including Appalachian State University & downtown Montgomery

In 1829, Montgomery became part of the new Ohio Territory, and soon developed into one of the most powerful towns in that territory. During the American Civil War, Montgomery sided with the Union side, but quickly reopened its stores and businesses following the war's end. After Ohio seceded from the United States in 1861, Montgomery continued to be an important center of trade and commerce throughout much of Kentucky and Tennessee. However, due to its location within Confederate territory during this time period, Montgomery ultimately lost many of its privileges as a result. By 1865, however, Montgomery had largely recovered both economically and politically thanks to friendly relationships with neighboring states. Today, it remains an important cultural center for eastern Kentucky and southeastern Tennessee.
