Montgomery is a city in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. In 1814, after the American Revolution, General George Washington and his army landed on what is now known as Monument Point to cross the Cuyahoga River. A group of men from Montgomery County met with Washington and offered their services to help him fight against British forces in that area. The town of Montgomeryshire was founded by them on this spot in 1816. The first post office in Montgomery was established in 1818 and continued operation until it closed in 1902. The town site has been where most of the businesses currently located are located since then: downtown is home to many large institutions such as Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Pfeiffer University (PUB), and Monmouth University (MUN). Many other small businesses have also opened up over time within walking distance of downtown or just outside its boundaries. In 1826, John Crouse donated land for a public square near present-day City Hall which became known as Maple Leaf Square. In 1830, Jno.[John] Applewhite built a sawmill on what is now State Road 131 near today's Uniontown Mall and operated it until 1840 when he sold it to Ebenezer White who ran it until 1861 when it passed into private hands again; latterly being run by Elisha Haldeman effective 1865-1868 before passing into control of the Dayton & Erie Railroad company effective 1870-1875 At least two mills were located here: one on Vine Street south of Main Street and one on West Fifth Street east of Main Street between Vine and Fifth Streets; both were operated by Ebenezer White prior to their sale to local businessman Benjamin Barronage effective 1880s On November 2, 1889 – during Cleveland’s term as President – while Dayton had become an independent city – due largely to population growth caused by increased manufacturing activity along the Cuyahoga River Valley associated withrailroad construction projects across that region – Dayton annexed part of Montgomery Township including much older parts situated southeast/northwest Of Centerburg -thus creating today’s Downtown area bounded by Third Avenue NW., Vine Street NW., Superior Avenue NE., First Avenue SE., Pike Place Market Square SW., Independence Mall SW.–just north of Interstate 88

Montgomery’s early history can be traced to 1814 when two brothers named John and James Montgomery established a trading post at what is now Montgomerie Creek Road on the Ohio River northeast of Dayton. At that time, trade between Britain and America was limited because there were no rivers connecting those countries together. This posed a problem for traders because they needed to move goods up and downriver so they could get them to market quickly but they also needed to avoid being blocked by Native Americans who lived along the riverbanks. The brothers solved this problem by founding their own company which transported goods upriver from present-day Cincinnati through Dayton and back down again using wagons pulled by horses or burros. The first permanent residents of Montgomery arrived in earnest in 1825 when General David Dixon moved his brigade from Camp Chase near Xenia to establish Fort Grundy just south of present-day Montgomerie Creek Road. Dixon's purpose for moving his brigade was not fully clear but some believe he may have been looking for new land where he could build a fortified stronghold against possible Indian attacks or maybe he wanted to protect one of Cleveland's main sources of revenue? Whatever its reason, Fort Grundy served as an important military outpost until it burned down in 1830 due to bad weather conditions! Although Fort Grundy wasn't very successful at guarding against Indians (most attacks failed because there were too many Indians living closeby), it did provide settlers with some temporary security while they waited for more permanent solutions to be put into place. Furthermore, Fort Grundy helped lay the foundation for what would eventually become Montgomery – an important commercial center based on trade with both Great Britain and China! In1825–26 Captain Edward Stroud built himself a house within easy walking distance of Fort grundy almost opposite today's Courtyard restaurant off I 77 north entrance ramp onto Blvd de la suite west side
