In 1814, John Montgomery erected a cabin where he lived until his death in 1828. His widow built another house on this site and called it "Montgomery House". It continued to be used as a home until about 1920 when it was sold and demolished by the local school district. The first post office at Montgomery opened in 1816, but closed due to lack of mail service from Dayton. A new post office was established at nearby Whitehall in 1819 and remained open until 1906. Montgomery is a city in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. The population was estimated at 20,871 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. The name "Montgomery" was given to the community by General James H. Montgomery after his victory over General David McKee at Battle of Chickamauga on September 15, 1864. The town's first Post Office was established in 1868 and it became a village in 1903. In 1907, it became a city and has grown steadily since then with an increase in population to its current size of 20,871 residents as of the 2010 census. In 1898, the City Council voted to become an agricultural center due to improved economic conditions around that time and land available for farming near by from private owners or purchased from government land grants. A new irrigation system was installed which increased crop yields and made Montgomery one of the most productive agricultural cities in Ohio during that time period. The country's largest cotton gin opened up shop here in 1901 and continues production today; also located nearby are some major manufacturing plants including two large electrical companies and several local stores such as Sears & Roebuck & Company (now Macy’s) which pioneered retail shopping here before moving nationwide beginning in 1911). The growth of industry led to more housing being built throughout downtown Montgomery starting circa 1940 with many small houses becoming larger apartment buildings until recent years when development has shifted towards smaller homes within walking distance of main businesses while still maintaining some older style homes scattered throughout town center for privacy reasons among other things like streetlights that have been turned off on request usually during nighttime so you can't see them from your home without getting out there to look
