On April 10 th , 1837 a committee appointed by Commissioners John Fenton (of Ashtabula) and Wm Hargrave (of Butte Township) laid out a town site on ground then owned by Ebenezer Drake on South Tryon Street between Third Avenue West and Fourth Avenue West in what is now part of downtown Dayton with future plans including extending this line further eastward into today's Union City neighborhood The town site was platted on June 15th , 1837 with Captain John Grosvenor as recorder On November 3rd , 1848 an act was approved providing for a school district within Montgomery Township which would include both present-day Dayton/Union City neighborhoods as well as parts of Coshocton township including present day Mount Lebanon On December 1st Legislative Session it was reported that $2 per week would be set aside for each family member or head Of Households In order To finance public schools in proposed new territory . This amount raised eyebrows since most families did not have enough money even if it allowed them one child to attend public school let alone two .. Nevertheless vote took place approving funds earmarked specifically For Public Schools A total cost of $14000 dollars resulted From this endeavor .. In January 1850 trustees Lawrence Hallowell & Jesse Biddle purchased property adjoining School District No 7 acres also known as Newtown Park from Mr Proctor For Use AS A FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT . This purchase effectively placed Montgomery within our current borders.. Property lines continue down Euclid Avenue where we currently stand today until it reaches Centre Street where it becomes University Drive
