Montgomery is a town in the Athens-Clarke County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,733 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Montgomery is located on the southern outskirts of Akron and shares borders with Defiance and Tuscarawas counties to the north, Fairfield and Mahoning County to the east, and Lake Erie to the south. The original name for Montgomery was "Creekstown". The first permanent settler in what would become Montgomery was James Wertz who landed there in 1796. He founded a log cabin known as Wertz's Cabin which still stands today on East High Street just outside of town limits. A post office called Creekstown was established in 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1836. In 1814 Simon Kenton attempted unsuccessfully to create an agricultural colony near present-day Dayton with land grant from President James Kieft. The failed venture led to Kenton realigning his holdings within Ohio so that he could continue developing new areas for agriculture rather than sell his land back to individual settlers or investors multiple times over several years. Kieft offered his donation of 640 acres (27 km²) southeast of Dayton for settlement by those who wished thereto – including future Montgomery residents David Hackett (1815), Isreal Dibble (1820), John Paine (1824), Joshua Brougham (1828), Ebenezer Spooner ( 1830), Salmon Chase (1834) – but no one replied. In 1835 Kieft granted another Donation Land Act acreage west of Dayton which became known as Montgomery after its founder.
