Montgomery, Ohio is a small town in the state of Ohio. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Montgomery is located in Stark County and is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. It is bordered by Fremont to the north, Mount Pleasant to the east, Lakewood to the south and west, and Shaker Heights to the northwest. The first settlers in what is now Montgomery were Native American people who lived along the Scioto River. A post office was established here on July 1, 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. A sawmill and grist mill were built here between 1830 and 1834. In 1836, John Wirt (a brother of James Wirt), a dentist from Cincinnati, opened a practice in Montgomery with three assistants. By 1840 there were over 20 practicing dentists in Montgomery. In 1846, George Washington Carver came to Montgomery from Cincinnati with his family to start a cotton farm that would be used for slave labor on plantations near Richmond Virginia during the era of slavery. The Carvers became prominent members of local society including serving as trustees for local schools and helping build churches throughout their community. In 1865 they bought 3 acres (1 km2) of land adjacent to their cotton farm which they used as an agricultural center for growing corn, peas and beans, sweet potatoes and other vegetables while also manufacturing products such as cheese made from skimmed milkfat cream puffs called "Carvels". The first stores in Montgomery were built around this time: a store operated by Elijah Morse opened on December 15th 1850 on State Street just south of Center Road; another store operated by Mr & Mrs Crouse opened on May 1st 1851 at 116 South High Street; also open at this time were two livery stables: one operated by Elisha Goodspeed ran off State Street between High School Avenue/US 36W & High School Avenue/West University Drive; Goodspeed sold horse feed out front while inside he kept haystack for customers' horses This period marked the beginning of what would become known as "Montgomery's Commercial Era." By 1861 there had been six stores operating within zip code 21601-* including four still extant today: Peoples Drugstore Inc., JBL Grocery Co., First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) - all located along Center Road - Store No 2 closed down due expanding services offered by nearby CitizensBank which occupied neighboring space across US 36W just south of Dayton Rd on high school avenue For several years starting around 1870 Merchants Trust Co.; later renamed Citizens Trust Company served most needs including banking activities but ceased operations circa 1880 after failed investments led board into receivership Then finally Stroud Grain Elevator started providing goods like flour & oatmeal through door next elevator

Montgomery is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, lying along the south bank of the Maumee River. It was founded in 1811 by James Montgomery and his family. The current community was built in 1905 on the site of an earlier, smaller settlement by the same name. The first white settlers in Montgomery (then known as Springfield) were John Howland and his brother-in-law Samuel Backus, who arrived from Connecticut on July 8, 1810. They started a tavern called The Tavern at Springfield which served as their home for about a year before moving to what is now Montgomery proper on October 15, 1811. They named their new settlement after James Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the State House of Representatives from York County, Pennsylvania. The area that would become Montgomery was part of Scioto County until it was unified with Summit County in 1902. In 1925, Summit County merged with Franklin County to form Trumbull County. At that time, Montgomery became part of Trumbull Township. In 1970, township boundaries were changed when Trumbull and Mahoning counties united to form Lake Erie Valley Township; however, Montgomery still remains within Mahoning Township's borders today. In 1905, local entrepreneur JB Bechtel donated land to create what is now the downtown business district around what is now First National Bank Plaza; he also donated money toward building a school and library services in those early days; these latter structures stand today at Fourth Street/First National Bank Plaza corner First National Bank Drive and University Avenue NW.). A fire destroyed most of Bechtel's businesses during a snowstorm on December 16th 1908 but fortunately no people or equipment were lost as result! That same year saw another major development when George Wickersham donated land east of Third Street between University Avenue NW., which would later house United States Steel Company's plants (now Johnson Controls), and Main Street NW.; this donation formed what are now Wickersham Park across from modern day PNC Arena (formerly municipally owned KeyBank Center). A post office was established at Springfield in 1812 under the name Springfield Village; it operated until 1830s when mail service moved to Cincinnati due to increased postage rates caused by western expansionism controlled by Congress via its Indian Wars appropriation Acts! From 1830-1855 local mail service originated out of nearby Germantown just north & west of Springfield Village while regular passenger service began operating out OF Springfield village starting Aug 1861 thru May 1865 entailing 3 coachloads daily consistiedof 45 passengers each departing @ 6 PM arriving @ 4 AM!!!!!!
Montgomery was founded in 1792 as a small farming village. It grew rapidly during the 19th century, becoming one of the most important towns in Ohio. The town's success led to its incorporation as a city in 1853.
