Madison invaded Ohio as part of his strategy to break Free Soil Republican rule throughout America, Montgomery became one of several settlements along with Akron and Xenia taken over by Union troops under Colonel George A.) The Union garrison here lasted only until March 1st when it burned down while supplies were being stored nearby; allistarces such as this signaled widespread military occupation hereabouts throughout much southern Black Belt country during these early years following emancipation. Montgomery is a town in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,799 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Montgomery was made by George Washington and his band of Tories on June 25, 1792 while they were exploring the area for a new home. Washington's group included neighbors John Armstrong and James Ketchum as well as David Rittenhouse and Robert Morris. They named their new place "Montgomery" after General George Washington's headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1801, Captain John Brown built a cabin on the East Fork of the Muskingum River near present-day Dayton after finding gold nuggets there. He named it "Brownsville" after himself and sold land to settlers who arrived from Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware over the next few years. By 1810 there were nine families living in Brownsville with seven cabins/houses and seventy-four acres (28 ha) of land claimed under various names including Beavercreek Township (now Xenia), Darlington Township (now Alliance), Greenfield Township (now Centerville), Lafayette Township (now Lodi), Mount Lebanon Township (now Uniontown), Newtown Valley Borough (Now Youngstown) and Whitehall Borough (Now Shaker Heights). In 1814 two groups of settler – one led by Captain John Hustedt from Cincinnati followed by Captains Isaac Noyes and Samuel Morse – invaded lands east of Dayton to build a road between Cincinnati and Toledo which they called the Miami Road or Great Western Road because it crossed into Canada near Kingston ON before continuing south to Fort Wayne IN. This road became known as US 1 when it was opened up to traffic in 1928 by US President Franklin D Roosevelt during his Hundred Days Plan which aimed to improve transportation conditions across America while avoiding military engagements abroad A store operated by Masons from Indianapolis started serving travelers along this route early on but it wasn't until 1830 that Montgomery also had its own post office which served both towns until 1865 when statehood created postal services within each county . In that year Montgomery also lost its status as an unincorporated community when all township boundaries were revised . During Reconstruction following the American Civil War many African Americans relocated to this area due to free labor opportunities available through the end of slavery at former slave states such as Ohio . As white men regained control over purchasing power throughout America following Reconstruction most African Americans eventually moved out west in search of opportunity . However some black families did maintain ties with their ancestral homes Oblong Settlement located east side off main street between Powell & Overstreet Streets remained open until 1975 running a grocery store & restaurant + service station
