Morse's donation proved key in helping start development within Montgomery and other cities along this railroad corridor. The early settlers were primarily farmers but by 1830 there were over 20 businesses in downtown Montgomery with 5 full-time employees and 100 residents! By 1840 there had grown into a small town of around 300 people with six stores and two churches! In 1854, when Ohio became a state, President James Koxwell made Maryland its new state capital; Montgomery became its second capital after Cincinnati proper! In 1861 during the American Civil War General George Custer's cavalry unit engaged Confederate forces near present day Mount Pleasant Cemetery northwest of downtown Montgomery; as a result many local citizens came out to support Custer's cause including Captured Union soldiers who lived among them until their release following surrendering at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 - just one week before Yorktown Battlefield).As war continued throughout much of America additional military units arrived including 3rd US Infantry Brigade under Brigadier General John Meeks which landed at Shiloh Naval Port Facility Texas on March 29th 1865 - just days after Confederate capitulation!!
