Montgomery is a town in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown–Wilmington metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Montgomery were two brothers, George and David Cobb, who arrived on horseback from Georgia in 1795. They named their new settlement "Montgomery" after General Sir James Montague (1747-1821), captain of British troops during the American Revolution. In 1801, local farmers granted land to John Taylor and others as township No. 6 in what would become Montgomery Township (now part of Hamilton Township). The first school was built in 1802 by Revs. John Green and Ebenezer Morse; it served as a grammar school until 1823 when it became a high school for white students only. In 1830, Methodist preachersESSJohn White and James Dyer founded the first Baptist church in this community with seven members: four men and three women from Lancaster County and one woman from Wyandotte County (now Johnson County). The church was dedicated on July 10th 1830 by Reverend White with an audience of about fifty people present including Captains Lewis Cass (1804-1875) and William McKinney (1807-1876). Reverend White served as pastor for forty years before his death in 1865. In 1848, President Zachary Taylor appointed Samuel Coltman to be superintendent of schools for Montgomery Township which he held until his removal to Lebanon Heights on October 3rd 1870 due to health problems caused by overwork. He again served as superintendent from 1871-79 before moving back to Montgomery where he died on January 8th 1880 age eighty six years old. After Samuel Coltman's death neath seventy five years old many residents felt that they could not continue running the school without him so they elected trustees Carr & Herron to succeed him as superintendent effective February 1st 1881 when they assumed office after being confirmed unanimously by the township board of trustees The original village was located along Third Street between National Road and Sharon Turnpike approximately north of present day I-670 west side of Dayton Drive NE On December 2nd 1916 during World War I soldiers came into town looking for munitions storage locations but found no such sites so left about two hours later than when they had come . On December 5th 1916 Captain Wm J Sellers reported seeing fifteen “Negroes” standing around near Fourth Street Schoolhouse waiting until dark then leaving through a wooded ravine leading south towards Dayton Village
