The Montgomery Gun Grip Company was founded in 1892 by C.E. Montgomery and his sons, Rufus and John. The company manufactured a variety of firearms including shotguns, handguns, rifles, pistols and revolvers. In 1922 the company changed its name to the Montgomery Firearms Corporation. The company continued to produce firearms until 1993 when it merged with Hennessey & Myers Incorporated to form Hennessey & Myers Incorporated/Montgomery Firearms Corporation.
Montgomery is a city in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,833 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Montgomery was Nicholas Long in 1792. A year later, James Wilkinson erected the first frame house on the present site of downtown Montgomery. More settlers followed in 1802 and 1803 with John Daniel's purchase of 350 acres (1 km²) on the edge of town from Moses Brown. These pioneers established Daniel's Mill which still stands today and produced flour for local markets until 1975 when it closed down due to economic trouble. By 1819, there were over 20 buildings in downtown Montgomery with a population of 100 people or more. In 1830, James Wilkinson built his second frame home – this time on Main Street – and began trading goods with other farmers around Great Britain and Europe through his store front windows until he died in 1840 at age 71 years old while living in Dayton. That same year saw another early settler arrive to Montgomery when Elijah Griggs purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of town from John Daniel for $8 per acre ($/km²). After three years’ farming efforts, Griggs had enough land to build a small lumber mill that functioned until 1865 when it caught on fire and burned to the ground; leaving behind only ruins today! In 1834-35 Andrew Goode erected a log cabin near what is now Fountain Square which served as both his home and business office for many years before being destroyed by fire in 1868; damaging much property within walking distance of where we stand today! During that time periodBirch Creek ran just south of downtown along High Street which backed up against our current building complex! Today you can find remnants such as stones and mortar from multiple buildings dating back to that time period scattered throughout Downtown Montgomery! In 1840-41 two Methodist ministers named Bledsoe arrived seeking converts among American Indians living near them on Muskingum River Valley (); they preached at various locations including Montgomery Falls Church Cemetery off Clairmont Avenue soon afterwards known as “Bledsoe”s Grove Cemetery because Reverend Bledsoe graciously allowed Indian traders access thereto during their missionary work among their people! One such location was between 4th & 5th Streets NW where Reverend Milton Gilbert officiated at services beginning Sept 10th 1840 (& continued Saturdays Evening even into November due primarily to lack OF clergy available nearer homes!) At 15 min walk from courthouse & 3 blocks away from general store— Revd Gilbert offered employment teaching Sunday School (& numerous religious meetings also held @ thislocation) From Oct 1st 1840 thru Nov 30th1840 about 150 children attended services each Sabbath evening (& some school sessions also took place outdoors)— considerable progress considering then “wilderness” located adjacent!! A post office called "Montgomery" was established at this location on October 27, 1840 under Act No.- 493 entitled "An act providing for the organizationof a postoffice within said county". The first mail arrived here on December 12, 1840 by wagonload full!!! The first letter carrier was William Waddell who brought 2 sacks containing mail each way costs only $2 dollars!!! On January 8th 1841 package reached Franklin County CO via Cleveland–Canton Railroad - one day ahead of schedule!!!!! The success stories don't stop there though--one can go all day long researching individual postal events/stories associated with Montgomery but suffice it to say that its history is richly intertwined with those surrounding it !! What makes Downtown Montgomery unique however are its many restaurants lining High Street—-the most popular destination for locals & visitors alike !!
