The first white person to live in Montgomery was George Washington Harris who settled there in 1814. In 1835, Isaac Pryor built what became known as the First African American Baptist Church in Montgomery. It was one of the first black churches in America and remains so today. The post office moved to Montgomery from Elyria on January 1, 1836. In 1839, Elisha Morse founded a gristmill here which still stands and processes grain into flour and feed for local farms and mills until it closed in 1984. Morse also developed an oil well near present-day Mount Auburn Road that continues to be operated today by Marathon Petroleum Company with its headquarters located adjacent to the millsite onState Route 44A/Montgomery Rd., just east of Interstate 71 exit 170 (Montgomery Road). In 1907, James Kapp started his grocery store at 915 N Main Street; it later became JK's Supermarket chain which continued until 2013 when it merged with Kroger Co.. Gertrude Kapp Peck opened her first restaurant here in 1923 called The Gertrude’s Place; she also co-founded Music City Grill which still operates today as a steakhouse & lounge complex across I-71 from JK’s Supermarket along State Route 444A/Montgomery Road. Ida Mae Payne operated a restaurant called "Mama Pickens" on Montgomeryshire Rd.(now Clairmont Ave)in 1951 before moving to 216 S Clinton St., Akron Heights IN 1948 where she operated Donnybrook Inn until her death in 2003 having served Montgomery residents since 1947 including many mayors over the years such as Tom Bowling and Chaka Fattah Jr.. In 1998 Mrs. Payne's granddaughter Darlene Payne opened up Mama Pickens II next door at 227 Clairmont Ave./Donnybrook Inn with same menu & hours(same owners) . On July 15th 2003 Darlene Payne closed Mama Pickens II after 35 years due to lack of business but left all remaining inventory behind including menus , signs etc . That property has been redeveloped into 221 S Clinton St., Akron Heights IN (later renamed Morningside Plaza), home of multiple restaurants now including 4 bars(Pizza Palace @ 231 S Clinton St.), nail salon(Atomic Salon @ 221 S Clinton St.)and medical marijuana dispensary Empire Wellness Center @ 227 Clairmont Ave./Donnybrook Inn

However, much of this activity came to a natural end due to environmental damage caused by decades of heavy industry including coal mining and manufacturing operations along I-71/I-475 corridors near downtown Montgomery
