Montgomery is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Montgomery was founded in 1836 and named for General James K. Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general who served as commander of the British forces in North America during the war. The community began as a small farming village on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River opposite Youngstown. In 1892, it became one of five townships within Cuyahoga County when it was organized from parts of Richland Township and Union Township. The township boundaries were changed again in 1928 to follow that year's annexation by Akron. In 1936, Montgomery incorporated as a town under state law following a referendum vote by its residents. The name honors General James K. Montgomery and other early settlers in what is now Montgomery Township who helped make the community an important center for commerce and industry during its early years. The first mayor was Jens Wessels; later mayors include Floyd Boice (1973-1975), Clifford Loyd (1984-1988), and Myron Hill (1998-2002). Montgomery is located at (41°02′16″N 80°27′14″W). However, because of its role during the American Civil War and its support for slavery, Montgomery is often considered one of the most important cities in Ohio history. After the war ended, Reconstruction began in Alabama and Mississippi and Montgomery slowly regained its reputation as an important center of commerce and industry. It also experienced significant waves of immigration: Italians beginning in the early 20th century; Poles beginning in World War II; Hispanic refugees from Mexico during that time; Latinos arriving after Hurricane Katrina brought destruction to New Orleans; African Americans coming following Hugo Chavez's election as president of Venezuela) Additionally, since 2008 has been Mayor John Hance's term with a focus on revitalizing downtown areas such as Market Square Despite these successes over recent yearsmontgomery still struggles economically with high unemployment rates among youth especially due to lackneither job training nor access to decent employment opportunities outside their neighborhoods
Montgomery was a small town in Montgomery County, Ohio, U.S., until the late 1800s. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in the early 1800s, and by 1822, they had erected a log cabin on the banks of the Scioto River. By 1830, there were thirteen settlers living in Montgomery. In 1836, when Ohio became a state, Montgomery was one of its initial counties. In 1840, residents voted to incorporate as a town. The first mayor was John Ahern and the first trustees were Amos Brown and James McKnight. The first store was built on Main Street in 1846 by Isaac Wirtzbaugh and it served as the court house until 1886. The population of Montgomery peaked at 230 in 1860 but decreased to 100 by 1870 because of lack of attention from government officials. However, during Reconstruction Period (1870-1877), townspeople increased their numbers to 150 through births and marriages within the community and within surrounding villages such as Dayton and Springfield Township which had also become part of Ohio since its statehood days In 1875-76 an actwas passed authorizing enlargement of Montgomery from two townships into three due to increasing population growth within those larger villages; however this did not happen and only two townships - Dayton Township (containing Montgomerysville)and Springfield Township (containing Parkersburg)were enlarged . By 1900 there were just sixteen residents remaining in Montgomery although it boasted an economy that included several businesses including a blacksmith shop operated by Elijah Hodge known as 'Hodges' forge'. In 1915 part of Parkersburg was annexed into Montgomery while most of Dayton Township remained under 3rd Ward jurisdiction
